Employability skills

Employability skills are those skills that apply to a variety of life and jobs context. They are defined as skills required for gaining employment and enhancing progress within a given enterprise. These skills are particularly valuable for employees to gain their full potential at their workplaces. Over the years, many skills have been attributed, but they can be categorized under broad groupings (Rao, 2010).

Employability skills compromise of communication and interpersonal skills. This is the ability of people explaining what they mean with clarity and conciseness. It must surface in both writing and spoken word.  Listening to what others have to say and reacting appropriately to the information is also relevant to this aspect.

Problem solving skills are also relevant in employability skills. It is the ability of understanding a problem by breaking it down to smaller parts. This aspect helps in identification of key issues, implications and solutions (Trought, 2011). Individuals are given the chance of applying knowledge derived from numerous sources.

Using one’s initiative and being self-motivated is also highly ranked. The aspect entails having ideas that can be transformed to reality. A strong personal drive must exist, where an individual does not wait for orders so as to complete a certain task.

Working to deadlines and under pressure is significantly observed by employers. This skill portrays itself when an individual I handling stress that comes with a deadline that must be met. Incompetent individuals will break down along the way and will not have the ability to deliver.

Organizational skills are also relevant while assessing employability skills. (Rao, 2010), says that is the aspect of being methodical and organized. It portrays the ability to plan so as to help in meeting deadlines and targets. An individual posses the ability of monitoring his or her progress of work to ensure they are on track of meeting the required objectives.

Team working is highly recognized. Individuals must showcase their ability to work efficiently with other people. The people to work with usually come from different backgrounds and disciplines. Necessary expertise in accomplishing goals should be showcased. Most people fail in producing positive results while working in others due to their attitudes. Working in partnership is vital for any organization (Orner, 2009).

Ability to learn and adapt is highly ranked on employability skills. Those individuals that posses this skill are always enthusiastic about their work at all times. They tend to find ways of learning from their mistakes. This works to the benefit of both the employer and employees. It is easy to prevent a disaster once people accept their mistakes and are willing to learn from them.

Numeracy is also noteworthy. This is the ability of using data and mathematics to support evidence. It also helps in making demonstrations. For any organization, figures have to be precise for convenience purposes. As a result, employees need to be competent in this scope.

Valuing difference and diversity is regarded as a valuable skill. There needs to be an indulgent of different needs that emanate from different people. The ideology is based on the massive gains that come to organizations based on diversity aspects.

It is not fair to talk of employability skills without mentioning negotiation skills. Individuals with this skill take on board other people’s feelings before expressing their own requirements. The process is undertaken without any emotions so as to come out with a win-win outcome.
