Environment 22

Today, global warming is one of the significant threats to human existence.  Therefore, scientists advocate for the utilization of artificial strategies to control climate change. Geoengineering or climate engineering projects are some of the human-made schemes developed to tackle the adverse consequences of climate change, by eliminating carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or reducing the amount of solar radiation reaching the earth’s surface. Humanity should embrace geoengineering projects to conserve the environment.

Carbon dioxide direct air capture is a geoengineering method that is technologically feasible, mobile, and can be installed anywhere on the earth and remain functional. This climate engineering project removes carbon dioxide from ambient air and stores it, hence reducing its concentration in the atmosphere. DAC systems are compatible with various modern technologies and equipment, making them applicable in a variety of CO2  emission sources such as vehicles, factories, and homes.  The CO2 acquired through this project can be used as fuel or fertilizer. Therefore, people should accept this geoengineering scheme for its various advantages in fixing the environment.

The use of reflective stratospheric sulfate aerosols as a form of geoengineering is economical, effective, and reversible. This technology entails spraying artificial aerosol particles into the stratosphere to obstruct and reflect sunlight away from the earth. This science creates a cooling effect and subsequently offsets global temperature proliferation. This method is environmentally friendly as it imitates a natural process, which is a volcanic eruption. Knowledge of volcanism can be utilized to control the humanmade injection of aerosols. With the available technology, such as aircraft, and artillery, this approach of fighting climate change is implementable and efficient. Artificial aerosol compounds can get ejected out of the atmosphere in between two to four years since the stoppage of the process. As a solar radiation management technique, this tactic should be adopted to fix the environment.

The space-based solar shield is a proposed geoengineering project that is aimed to shield the earth from the direct solar radiations. This tactic is considered as the most sophisticated and least feasible method of solar radiation management and entails outfitting the clouds with a transparent material that will redirect sunlight away from the globe, cooling the environment. The primary advantage of this project is that once the project .is launched, there shall be immediate results, characterized by a noticeable change in climate. This endeavor to conserve the environment is commendable, and experts should not relent in its pursuit.

On the other hand, opponents of geoengineering projects as strategies of fixing environment argue that most of the stated methods deplete the ozone layer, disrupt natural processes, and are expensive to develop and manage. This viewpoint is superficial as it does not compare the pros and cons of the technology. Albeit there are some adverse effects of geoengineering to the environment, the fact that its merits outweigh demerits is an adequate substantiation that humankind should pursue climate engineering projects to evade climatic phenomena that pollute the environment. Engineers and other affiliated professionals must conduct more researches on other possible geoengineering projects, especially those that have fewer side-effects.

In conclusion, geoengineering projects are the perfect approaches to thwarting global warming. These methods are feasible, practical, reversible, mobile, and the CO2 captured is used as fuel or fertilizer. These benefits notwithstanding, geoengineering projects have disadvantages which include depletion of the ozone layer, disruption of weather, and astronomical costs.
