Flag Assignment

PART 1

The number of participants in my poll was gender balanced; 3 men and women. However, there was a difference in the responses that I got from both genders. I had a hard time finding and convincing men to participate in the poll. The female participants were willing to answer all the questions that I asked them.

PART 2

The female participants were not of the same age. Their age ranged from 18 – 35 years old. Their difference in age was good for the poll because I extracted a wide range of information from them. Every participant had a different way of answering the questions that I asked. I realized that participants with more age had an in-depth knowledge because they answered all the questions with much ease. The male participants were not of the same age. Their age ranged from 18 – 30 years old. It was challenging getting male participants to take part in the poll. Most of the targeted male participants were quick to state that they are not familiar with art analysis. However, every male participant took time to answer the poll questions uniquely. I realized that male participants with more age had a rich knowledge regarding the art under analysis. On the other hand, the younger male participants owe their knowledge on technology advancement. That is because information is readily available on the internet regarding our country history.

PART 3

Education level impacts people’s intellect ability. One of the male participant I had to interview had not gone past elementary school. Therefore, when answering the poll questions, he responded in a way that reflected his shallow intellect ability. Most of the information that he gave was what he heard from his peers and parents while growing up. The other two men seemingly had a good sense of what the flag stood for and knew various meanings of those artworks. When it came to female participants, one of them had had not furthered her education past high school level. Hence, when compared to the rest of the ladies who had finished their college education I could see a difference in how they viewed various issues.

PART 4

Mainly from the art, what is seen is a fist with the USA flag drawn on it. This was the answer I acquired from the six people whom I interviewed. They all talked of it as a positive sign. When it came to the young poll respondents, they mentioned it as a sign of togetherness which meant that the USA was a strong nation. One of the females said the art was meant to show that our country was not afraid of the terrorists. The male respondents generally supported the fact that the USA is a superpower, and was stronger compared to other nations.

PART 5

From the six people I had interviewed they all found those pieces of art quite confusing. For the ladies, one of them said it is positive. She argued that it illustrated the influence USA had on other nations, for instance, India in general. Other two ladies said that the image was negative. They argued that since it reminds people of the history and how the people of USA used to mistreat Indians. They also saw it as a reminder of the slavery era. When it came to men, they viewed the image message as positive. Men respondents viewed it as a symbol for the period when Indians living in the USA were treated fairly and had rights that protected them.

PART 6

All I collected from this piece of art was positive. A young female talked of it as a sign of peace. The lady argued that the USA used its flag to show people’s unity and as a symbol bringing people together. When it came to the older ladies, they said that it was a sign of free will. That is one can do anything as long as it is considered lawful by the government. On the other hand, the male said that it was a sign of power which they said was symbolized by the stars.

PART 7

Law is there to be followed, and it aids the government to ensure there is order. Hence, various laws protect the dignity of our country’s flag. For example, the young female respondent was aware of the fact that one has to stand every time a flag was being raised or as a sign of respect. That was the similar case with the two young male respondents. The older ladies said that the flag is a national symbol, therefore, has rules regarding it. They gave examples of suddening events such as the death of our nation’s iconic figure, or a disaster striking the country as when the law requires flags to be raised half-mast. The older man said that in case of US military camp was attacked the army should not leave the flag behind.

PART 8

From my point of view, based on the assignment one can see that various people have different opinions. Those opinions are dependent on what one has learned or heard from others. A good example where I differ with the participants is in the second art. It is meant to illustrate the torture that Indian people went through in the USA. Another bit is where one says the flag should never be left behind in case of an attack in the military camp. That is because one’s life is essential and should be put into consideration before making any decision.
