Gambling

Gambling is the wagering of money or other material possession with an intention of winning money or other materials from their opponents. Though majority of people view gambling as a funny exercise which is carried out to pass time, I strongly believe that gambling is bad and should be condemned with the strongest terms possible. This is because the exercise is likely to cost the society more than it would benefit. Gambling is a behavior which causes many disruptions and of different kind which ranges from physical, physiological and social. In essence gambling will do more harm to the society than good as I will outline throughout this paper(Derevensky, 2005).

One of the reasons why i believe that gambling is bad in the society is because it is major cause of increase in crime rate in the society.  This is even more serious in cases where gambling has reached the addiction point. Most gamblers are in most cases addicted to gambling such that they do not have time for other economic business. Most people involved in gambling are in most cases ones who cannot afford to gamble. These people usually practice gambling with a sole objective of getting rich quick which is the unlikeliest event. Most of these gamblers lose their fortune in the gambling process and thus results in increased crime rates. This is the reason behind several cases of crime in places near casinos.

Another social cost associated with gambling is increased loss of productivity by those people addicted in gambling. Most people who are addicted to gambling spend most of their time in casinos and other gambling places. This time can be spent in other productive activities that can instill economic growth in an economy (Derevensky, 2005). These gamblers spend most of their time in casinos thus making them lack time even for their families. Lack of time to be with family will be accompanied by other problems such as suicide, increased incidences of child abuse among others. If gambling was a mere fun, I wonder whether having unschooled children in the society are also a fun. This makes me strongly condemn gambling as it results in agony in the homestead as well as in the society at large. Most of these gamblers have also had major problems in their work places due to lateness and frequent absenteeism. Gambling has indeed rendered several people jobless and thus it should be discouraged at whatever cost.

Gambling is also bad because it is associated with numerous stresses. Majority of gamblers have suffered psychologically as a result of their betting habits. For instance, majority of gamblers have experienced several family break ups due to financial problems. Most gamblers have wasted a lot of their resources in gambling thus making them bankrupt. Lack of financial muscles has made many families to suffer thus leading to separation and divorce which are very stressful situations. Most gamblers feel isolated by their family members and friends since they rely very much on borrowing and thus they are viewed as nuisance in the society (Derevensky, 2011). Some of the people involved in gambling are miserable and thus not many people would want to be associated with them. This lack of love and support in the society is a very painful and stressful experience. This is why I believe that gambling should be treated with utmost contempt.

Another reason why i am against gambling is the fact that most gamblers are involved in many fights and abuses in the process. The continuous state of stress experienced by many gamblers results in them becoming more aggressive and physical. In cases where a gambler loses his/her stake it is normal that they become more remorseful. They are also prone to stress and depression which results to physical assault or emotional abuse. Gambling has in the past resulted to physical confrontations among the gamblers thus leading to injuries. Excessive fighting and abuses can be very devastating as the victims may end being physically disabled or spend the rest of their lives in jail. Previous researches ,such as one carried out in Nebraska medical school have suggested that gambling in most cases results to violence such as is the case in alcohol abuse (Derevensky, 2005).

In conclusion, it is evident that gambling does more harm than good in the society. Apart from the bad things associated with gambling discussed above, it is crystal clear that gambling does less good than harm. For instance, there is much isolation, risk of suicide, emotional, physical and mental problems just to name a few add to the list of the great undoing resulting from gambling. Though gambling has some few advantages such as tax earned from casinos, it is important for every federal government to review its stand on gambling to ensure that it is never legalized. This will save several homesteads as well as the society from devastating problems. All necessary measures should be put in place to ensure that gambling is prevented at all cost. This will help the society to be actively involved in other income generating projects rather than just surviving on hope and good luck (Derevensky, 2011).  That is why i welcome you all in my crusade against gambling. Gambling is also prohibited in the Holy Bible and thus it is important to treat gambling with a lot of contempt.
