Introduction

The workplace environment can at times be very dull to the employees. Nevertheless, it is the obligation of the managements in these organizations to ensure that they reduce boredom in the workplaces and improve staff productivity.  The repetition of daily routines in the workplace is considered a grunt work and gamification can be instrumental to supplant grunt work. Gamification has over the years been used as a tool to enhance employee’s motivation and improve their productivity in their respective workplaces. In gamification, it is often said that game elements will get rid of the boringness of work, and I would say, some processes will be made less tedious, but repetition will remain (“27 Game Techniques Pokemon Go Used to Capture the World”, 2016). It is, therefore, important for the employers to understand that gamification will only serve the purpose of improved productivity only if it is perfectly implemented. It is prudent to point out that some of these games elements are annoying, and hence it’s essential to ensure that only those games that are interesting that are used in their places of work.  In essence, managers must learn how to break the workplace monotony and improve productivity.

Gamification supplants grunt work

As aforementioned, the workplace environment is at times boring due to the monotony arising from the repetition of the daily chores.  Consequently, the employees’ motivation and happiness are dealt a big blow, and their productivity is also significantly reduced.  Many business organizations have consequently decided add gamification to business processes (“It's Not Gamification: It's How You Use It”, 2016).  The level of employee motivation and happiness is critical to the overall productivity of the organization. It is on this premise that I believe that gamification will have a significant impact on this excellent course. The process allows social interaction amongst the employees and as a result, increases their productivity.

A good example of a gamification process that can be easily integrated into a workplace environment is the Pokémon Go phenomenon. As aforementioned, employees in any workplace may get bored by the repetition of the daily tasks they perform every day. However, integrating this phenomenon in a business organization can significantly reduce boredom to the employees in such organizations. It is a process that allows social collaboration amongst the employees where they share ideas and engage in collaborative learning experiences. The process allows improved communications between the different departments in an organization thus raising the organization’s expectations levels (“27 Game Techniques Pokemon Go Used to Capture the World,” 2016). Also, the process allows employees to communicate and perform their duties from different geographical locations. This is instrumental as it helps break the monotony of attending to the office daily. Working from different geographical locations will increase the employee’s motivation and productivity.

Playing Pokeman Go can also be a good experience in a workplace that intends to break the monotony and boredom in their workplace. It is prudent to note that games have the ability to keep people engaged for a long time, build relationships and trust between people and develop their creative potentials.  It is, however, prudent to understand that some of these games may be very addictive and hence hinder the employees from performing their daily tasks. Octalysis analysis is one of the most recognized gamification process adopted in various organizations.  Octalysis breaks down motivation into 8 Core Drives, including things like Epic Meaning & Calling, Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback, Scarcity & Impatience, etc., and it allows anyone to create really something that is more engaging (“How Pokémon GO Relates to Gamification in the Workplace – eLearning Industry”, 2016). For instance, Pokeman Go has been an instrumental tool to help employees interact and improve their relationships and trust. Throwing Pokeballs; spinning Pokestop dials; gym battles are some of the activities that if effectively utilized can help improve the overall productivity of an organization.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, workplace environment can be boring at times and managers, employees and all stakeholders in an organization to strife and ensure they break the monotony and boredom in their respective organizations. Gamification is known to have fun and addictiveness that can be instrumental in real-world or productive activities to improve productivities (“What is Gamification”, 2016). The gamification process optimizes human efficiency and productivity. In essence, efficient use of gamification can be instrumental in ensuring that employees’ productivity is enhanced significantly.
