Gender Bias

Introduction

The self-assessment test showed that there were different views when it comes to careers and gender. However, the majority of participants believed that men were better than women were at jobs. These people also associated more women with family compared to men. The assessment helped to show what the society still thinks about men and women.  The views of most of the participants depended on the level of their self-awareness, gender prejudice and how much media and personal interactions have influenced their opinions towards certain subcultures.

The assessment made me realize that society still associates more men with careers compared to women. It is sad to note that people still believe that women should be at home taking care of the family in this era. The society should change its mindset because things have changed significantly. Despite what we may assume to be true, the number of women taking up careers is increasing considerably (Horn, 2018). Majority of families have a babysitter to take care of the kids and the house because both couples are working. Women have joined almost all careers that men have dominated for years, and only a few of them stay at home to take care of the family.

Indeed, one key aspect of the society that stands out in the assessment is gender prejudice. Nevertheless, I believe that discrimination is not an entirely conscious process. There is a probability that most of the people who participated in the test made their choices innocently. The aspect of prejudice comes out only after a more in-depth analysis of the whole assessment exercise. Furthermore, most people give specific answers based on what they know or experience (Nygren, 2018). As a result, the participants may have answered questions depending on either their parents or their roles in the family. For example, a person whose both parents are career professionals would have quickly concluded that men and women are equal when it comes to earning income (Nygren, 2018). Although Prejudice happens unconsciously in most people, increased public awareness will help to minimize it in the society.

Formal and informal interaction with people and media plays a very substantial role in the mentality that one has about certain subcultures or groups. A child that grows in a racist family is likely to become racist as an adult (Morgan, 2017). The constant demeaning of the other race in that family will make the child believe that the concerned groups are inferior to them. Conversely, a child that grows in a mixed-race family is not likely to be racist in the future because they grow in a culture that appreciates diversity. The media also influences the views that society has towards other subcultures. For example, a modeling magazine that only has white models makes people believe that black is not beautiful (Morgan, 2017). Similarly, television programs that mostly show African-Americans portraying violent behavior may affect the way the society thinks about them. The community should try to interact with media or persons that are unbiased towards other subcultures.

Conclusion

The number of women in different professions is increasing gradually. The society will no longer have a bias towards women because they will also be working. Gender prejudice is not a conscious process; however, constant public awareness will educate the public on the vices of prejudice. Additionally, interactions with people and the media play a significant role in our views towards different groups of people. Accordingly, people should try to interact strictly with people and media that influence them positively. Finally, there is still hope of having little or no bias towards different groups in the society.
