Going for a Hike

On a warm Thursday morning, in the beginning of February, my best friend Scott and I decided to go for a hike. We were visiting Guam, a little island in between California and Hawaii. While researching online for ideas of things to do in Guam, we stumbled upon a hidden waterfall hike. Instantly, we knew that we had to attempt the five-mile hike through clay, swampland, and a treacherous slope.

That morning, Scott, another friend of ours Panda, and I set off on our adventure. Our journey began with us driving our Jeep through the hills of Guam. The grass blew in the wind, the sun beat down on our faces, and the sound of reggae music filled the air. It took us about twenty minutes to arrive to the trail. We exited the vehicle, took off our shirts, sprayed on tanning lotion, and packed beer for the hike. The trail started, on the side of the road in this little opening. Decorating the trees were shoes that were smothered in clay; foreshadowing what was to come.

We entered the crevice and we were off to find the hidden waterfall. After walking for around twenty minutes we arrived on this beautiful hill with a scenic view of the entire valley. Panda was a photographer so she took some pictures for us. Scouting out the path we had to take to reach the waterfall, it looked easy; so, we thought. On the way to the waterfall, we heard about an abandon tank, and so we searched for it. We had been walking for almost an hour and a half now, when we came upon ridge. At the top of the ridge, we saw a majestic, battle torn, rusty, beast. There she was, the legendary tank. I took off running and Scott soon followed. Suddenly, we ran into a marsh, a layer of brush hid. Our feet sunk instantly, and so we took our shoes off and plucked them from the mud.

“That explains why the trees were decorated with shoes.” I said to Scott.

He answered, “I know, that clay is no joke, I just bought these shoes too! It will take me forever to clean them.”

“I’m not keeping mine. The trail can have them now.” I replied

After we got out of the mud we arrived at the tank. We took some amazing pictures, fooled around, and then continued our journey. Next on our journey was the most challenging part.  The slope was on a thirty-degree decline, that went for almost one thousand feet. Along the slope was a thick mooring line. It ran through the trees down to the waterfall. On the way down, we slipped and fell on the moss and rocks, until we reached the bottom.

Finally, we pushed our way through some forestry and followed a little river to the waterfall. We came to an opening in the trees and we saw the waterfall.  The water flowed from a mountain, glistening in the sunlight as it poured into a pool of water. Astonished by the sight, we sat there and took it all in. Our journey was now complete, and we made some amazing memories. After it all, I hung my shoes on the trees at the beginning, honoring the trail.
