Graduate School Statement of Purpose

I am planning to join USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology to pursue either a Master of Science in Gerontology or a Master of Arts in Gerontology. Since childhood, I have had an interest in biological studies such as the aging process, as evident in my past activities where I worked with philanthropic communities targeting these groups. I feel that the population of senior citizens in the country is increasing, hence the growing need for professionals competent in gerontology. I believe that the elderly population experiences many risk factors such as the prevalence of chronic conditions. Disorders such as heart diseases, diabetes, and dementia often disrupt the end life of the group.Considering the fact that high rates of aging today are mainly contributed by poor eating habits, gerontology should be highly encouraged among youths so that new ways of dealing with conditions associated with old age can be devised, and awareness created.

Some of the areas that I am interested in are Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, emotional and aging problems. Unlike geriatrics, gerontology is multi-disciplinary which covers social, mental, and physical aspects of aging. In the past, I have worked with community organizations that take care of the elderly population. Most of the elderly individuals experienced Alzheimer’s disease, which is a mental condition that affects the memory and psychological functionality of patients. Having interacted with a good number of professionals who have helped to fuel my need and interest in gerontology, I am looking forward to broadening my skills and knowledge by enrolling in a professional and reputable institution. Should I get an opportunity to further my skills in gerontology, I intend to start my program that will educate people in the society on various ways that they can improve the quality of lives of the aged people.

I attended the University of Southern California, where I studied a degree course in Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. The duration of the program was four years. This offered me a platform to interact with diverse groups of other professionals. As such, I was able to improve my communication skills as well as understand the culture of other people.During my study at the university, I gained essential skills related to the aging process, like factors that accelerate the aging process, diseases, and conditions that are associated with aged people.

After completing my studies, I became engaged with different organizations. For instance, in 2017, I worked at Sejin Kindergarten Hiwaseong, Korea as an assistant teacher. During this period, I have involved in schooling young children alongside other teachers and preparing event decorations. My job entailed overseeing activities and education of young children. I later joined the University of California, San Diego, CA institution, where I served as are search assistant in Systems Neuroscience Lab in 2018. In the position of a research assistant, I took part in experiments, translated works, and managed different schedules. As such, I gained significant skills in research activities. I feel that I am in a better position to employ these skills in pursuing my master’s program.

I have also engaged in a variety of charity and voluntary programs where I have as well gathered great knowledge and insight. One regional program that I had joined while I was still in university was Youth Nursing Club Norwalk, CA, whose primary goals were taking care of the old people in the society. The organization envisioned a society where people would be able to live quality lives even at their old ages, thereby increasing their live lengths to over a hundred years.

It is worth noting that successful operation cannot be attained without having the required communication and leadership skills. This is because they aid in minimizing possible cases of conflicts. In the period 2014-2015, I worked as the secretary of the Southern California Nursing Club. Some of my duties entailed taking care of patients, organizing and cleaning medical supplies. During this period, I also served as the leader of the California Wellness Club. Most of the activities in this position entailed humanitarian actions such as donating clothes and foods to needy groups. Working with vulnerable groups such as street children and the elderly population has provided me with a glimpse of what the field entails, thus fueling my urge to join USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology to pursue Master of Science in Gerontology.

These activities further shaped my passion for working with community organizations. Currently, many areas need to be addressed as various health and emotional issues faced by the elderly population. Other than just engaging in communal activities, I feel that there is the central need to ensure that I improve my academic understanding of the problem. Joining the institution will be a significant milestone in the attainment of these objectives.

In later years, there are increased chances that I will meet with diverse patients. While this might be challenging, the institution will offer me an opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds. I will, thus, be in a position to interact and uphold values of other groups without registering conflict of interest. On the other hand, I will have the opportunity to increase my professional network, which will prove beneficial during my career. Likewise, my qualifications and skills will contribute towards the improvement in the quality of life of the elderly population.
