Developing the United States of America to become the country it is today has not been an easy task. Nation building g usually entails sacrificing, loss of lives and freedom and lack of comfort. The founding fathers had a vision for the United States of America. The complex nature of attaining liberation, democracy, equality, and justice for people is not an easy task. Events like the civil wars, genocides, and coups have shaped the world and societies of today to their present states. The situation in general means that the fights, lobbying, call to action, demonstrations and protests are never smooth, and this is true for all societies and nations; the United States of America included.

Causes of the American Civil War

The American Civil War broke out in April 1861 between the Northern and the Southern states primarily because of the controversies that involved the enslavement of black people (Hall et al., 2017). The loyalists in the Northern regions supported the constitution and were facing challenges from the South who advocated for the different states to uphold slavery. Several other reasons were believed to have fuelled the war to greater heights and worsened the situation. The various reasons included territorial crisis, the election of Abraham Lincoln, sectionalism, state’s rights, protectionism and nationalism (Rable, 2016).

The Course of the American Civil War

According to Hall, the war broke out shortly after the election of Abraham Lincoln as the president of the country. The major issues were allowing states to continue enslaving the black people and the election of Abraham Lincoln (Rable, 2016). The war was not easy to control as many reasons were believed to have caused it. Overall, the war is considered to be the earliest industrial wars in the world. During the war, great technologies were employed including mass production of weaponry, sophisticated communication systems and civilian involvement (Hall et al., 2017).  The American Civil war remains the deadliest war in modern day America as it cost the country around 800,000 soldiers and millions of civilians. In an overview, the war claimed 30% of Sothern white men aged 18-45 and approximately 10% of Northern men aged 20-45. The participants were the Northern and Southern states who differed on their views about slavery and ascension of Lincoln into power (Rable, 2016)

.Consequences of the American Civil War

The war led to the death of millions of civilians on both regions and the destruction of property across the country. Close to 800,000 soldiers perished in the battle while the wealth of the Southern parts declined drastically while that of the Northern and Western regions grew. The end of the war resulted to the Emancipation Proclamation that encouraged African Americans to join the Union Army (Rable, 2016) The most important thing is the coming together of the North and South and the reconstruction that followed after that. Historians argue that the present day America has made a lot of progress in terms of justice, economic growth and development, respect for human rights, democracy all because of the war (Hall et al., 2017).

Historical Evidence

The freeing of slaves and the banning of slavery is open evidence of the historic event across the states. The country is presently comprised of 50 states, the District of Columbia and several other possessions, and all this became a possibility after the end of the civil war. Universal suffrage has been allowed and promoted in the country as a result of the civil war (Rable, 2016). The political stability of the country became possible after all warring parties were considered and the constitution amended to allow the changes. Today, the United States is a first world country and a leader in global affairs because of most gains that were made during and after the war. The reconstruction of the country to a modern nation took place after the civil war (Rable, 2016)

Conclusion

History and events associated with it are only the agents of change and are the unique things that a nation can boast about. Most historical events have cost millions their lives and freedom, but in essence, this has only meant better lives, unlimited opportunities, and freedom for the new generations. Ethically, war and conflict are not welcome and are discouraged, however, they are at times the only sails by which winds of positive change and progress can be associated with.
