Horror Story Analysis

The story takes readers through some of the horrifying events of our vacation to an unknown beach. While we had hoped that our journey would be full of happiness and thrilling moments, we had an encounter with cannibals where Devour lost his thumb. The choice of the idea was based on the fact that it was easy to relate to real life experiences as well as the events in many horror movies. Many of the horror films are based on vacations by young people. I am a fan of movies, and I also like going camping and hiking.

The choice of cannibals is in line with the trend in many horror movies where there is the use of zombies, man-eaters, sycophants, and other outlaws as the antagonist. Although cases of cannibalism in society are rare, they tend to create unexplainable fear for human beings. Moreover, I felt that sycophants are common in many stories and movies and would thus not offer the intended entertainment and thrill to readers.

While I have never encountered such an ordeal in real life settings, I always thought of the worse that would happen to me while in the vacation. One of my friends also shares the same interest and often accompanies me for camping during the holidays. When at the camp, we often watch horror movies from our tablet and joke about being attacked by Zombies. I thus felt that the story would offer me a chance to express my past thoughts.

The other reason was the need to create a tense and captivating environment. While the introductory part creates the feeling that the journey would be full of fun, readers are later shocked to learn that the event did not go as planned. An example is cited in the process of searching and booking for the beach. It gives readers the suspense of wanting to know whether we had fun or interacted with other people. Employing suspense is an effective way of ensuring that the readerremains hooked to the story.

There has also been the use of foreshadowing where there is an attempt to give the reader an idea of what is likely to unfold. After arriving at the beach, the story offers a description of the surrounding facilities and the sinister smile from the receptionist. There is the mention of the containers as opposed to the beautiful cottages on their websites. It is an indicator that all was not well and the receptionist was hiding some information. It creates the suspect of wanting to know what will happen during our stay.

However, the mention of a party in a near beach creates more suspense as the reader is lost on where we would meet a bad ordeal. However, there is a relief after indicating that the party went on smoothly and we were soon in our boat. The choice of the climax sought to create a feeling that we were desperate in the middle of the ocean. This means that we could not escape. The climax of the story is after Tokyo discovers that the receptionist and other cannibals were on the boat. It creates a tense and hopeless feeling.

On the other hand, the story has used dialogues as a way of expanding on different themes and also creating a sense of feeling. An example is a conversation between Devour and Tokyo on the boat. The conversation offers the impression that Devour was less concerned with the events taking place. However, it later emerges that he was the most reliable and energetic person. The revelation gives the reader the desire of wanting to know the plan that Devour will come up with to save us.

The portrayal of Devour as being drunk as opposed to other characters is intended to create a feeling of sympathy that our only hope was intoxicated. The rosary held by Cynthia was a symbol of the fear we had and the prayers we made to overcome the situation. Despite having argued in an earlier scene, the story indicates that both Tokyo and Devour hid in the same place. While the conversation with Tokyo had portrayed him as being a joker, we later see him jumping to the floor to confuse the cannibals.

I can define the story as having used different literal devices effectively and also communicated its themes efficiently. It is interesting and also creates a sense of suspense among readers. The choice of cannibals further makes the story unique and prompts readers to want to find out what transpired.

On the other hand, the use of dialogue offers a chance to shed more light on the traits of other characters. Moreover, it makes the story more interesting. There has been the use of irony as the beach is marketed as an exotic destination, but we later learn that the information was untrue and misleading. It is the unfolding of these events that make the story more enjoyable and exciting.
