Human Diseases and the Microbiome

Introduction

A gut microbiome is a group of micro-organism populations that are usually found in the intestines of a human being. Gutmicrobial plays a preeminent role in the causing of diabetes. Diabetes, on the other hand, is a disease in a human body where the sugar or glucose levels are high or low. According to research, diabetes has been ranked as the seventh killer disease in the United States of America(Tidy, 2017). There are two types of diabetes which are type 1 and type 2. With type 2 of diabetes a person’s pancreases produce insulin hormones as normal, but the insulin is either damaged or not enough to control the sugar levels.

Gut microbiome influences on diabetes

Scientists argue that some people are disposed to be affected by some pathogens and bacteria while others guts can exhibit some severe cases of bacterial strains. One way that they say the gut microbiome is manipulating the body’s metabolism causing diabetes is by the metabolites and chemicals that the bacterium excretes(Arumugam et al., 2016). Scientists also state that the bacterium causes inflammation in the gut where they produce some insulin resistant antigens. These bacteria are sometimes obese and can lead to chronic low-grade inflammation which can lead to a person who has diabetes.

Research reported so far

According to the video “The Gut Microbiome”(2015), Dr Frank Greenway said that they had found an absolute specimen of acid that is produced by the gut microbiome that affects insulin production. Their research involved 400 people who were to take some dietary fibre that was to stimulate the growth of microbes. For those who took the sample, they were recording high levels and those who did not have low levels of insulin. Another study used stool samples of 300 volunteers who had the conditions of lean and obesity. The obese participants demonstrated having high insulin resistance and gained a lot of weight over the cause of time.

Current level of understanding about the gut microbiome and diabetes

Currently comprehending that the gut flora plays a significant role in the causing of diabetes is very important. However, the development of treatment on this cannot begin up until a scientist can point out a specific bacterium that is responsible. The figuring out of the beneficial bacterium by current studies is very important can kick start the development of the right cure or a supplement that will have the ability to reduce its effects(Tidy, 2017). Current studies have not yet been able to identify the primary relationship between bacteria and diabetes.

Therapies or treatments used for patients with diabetes

Treatments for diabetes are there and involve the oral taking of drugs and injections of insulin. Examples of oral medications for the treatment of diabetes are Metformin which lowers blood sugar levels by decreasing the amount of glucose, Alpha-glycosidase inhibitor which delays the absorption of carbohydrates by the gut among others (Arumugam et al., 2016). Apart from the oral treatment there also exist some conventional therapies for patients with diabetes. These include some regular jogging exercises, meal controls, and taking of oral glucose. These therapies are a good thing because they work towards the achievement of the lowering of glucose in the bloodstream. This, in turn, results in the breeding of healthy gut flora.

Sensationalising claims made for therapies that use the gut microbiome

Sensationalising and grandiose claims are always there regarding the therapies and have worked towards the disadvantage of the researchers and their studies. One example of these claims are those instances where unprofessional people appear from nowhere and start claiming that their uncertified products are the best. There is no difference between these claims and the research in the videos, and one fact that they take advantage of is that the professional researchers have not discovered the right cure hence theirs cannot be disputed (Tidy, 2017). However, all this science is at infancy and needs more works; hence there is no need for the sensational and grandiose claims.

Recommendation for the people suffering from diabetes

I would recommend anyone who has diabetes to seek medical assistance as soon as possible and would also advise them to use the therapies that I examined. Research has indicated that those people who neglect to seek for assistance earlier may develop further medical complications in the future. Examples of these complications include those of internal injuries, loss of body parts through amputations and one may also go blind. Scientists have come up with different methods of regulating the blood sugar levels, but many people find it hard having to follow the daily medication dosage. Lastly, one way that one can be able to avoid being disposed to diabetes is by eating healthy meals and doing some regular exercise.

Conclusions

Scientists and researchers are continually conducting studies and experiments to make sure that they find the right cure for diabetes. Word out there is that one day they will get control of the whole microbiome and win this war. However, current studies like that of assessing how the gut microbiome are only trying to find some of the ways to avoid and prevent diabetes rather than getting the complete cure and treatment. Many diseases in the 21st century are being caused by the lifestyle people are living and the kind of meals they are eating. Regular exercises and the making sure that one is taking in a balanced diet remains the way to take in the global fight of some diseases such as diabetes.
