Independent Executive Agencies

These are the Agencies that are charged with the administration of laws and federal regulations applying to specific areas. They administer law and regulations in areas like homeland security, environment, education, social security, and veteran affairs. They are experts in the areas of specialization, self-governed and not controlled directly by the president. Most of the independent agencies are headed by board or commissions appointed by the president. Just a few of the agencies are led by one director or administrator appointed by the president. These agencies function more autonomously but are overseen by the Congress. Heads of the independent executive agencies can only be ousted out of office in case of poor performance and not due to their political affiliations they. These agencies make their own rules, deal with conflicts and discipline the employees who break the laws. Examples are Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Communication Commission, and Consumer Product Safety Commission among others.

Independent Regulatory Agencies

These are federal agencies created by an act of Congress that is independent of the executive departments. They impose and enforce regulations without any political influence. They are always considered part of the executive branch of government. They include the Interstate Commerce Commission, Federal Communication Commission, and Exchange Commission among others. The need for these agencies arose due to the growing industrialization and urbanization of USA in the 19th century. Therefore they were formed to regulate the economic activities of the country.

Cabinet Departments

The cabinet forms the part of the executive branch of the United States federal government. The tradition of the can be traced back to the inception of the presidency.  All the cabinet secretaries act as the primary advisors to the president on any information he needs relating to the duties of members of given offices.  The cabinet secretaries perform several domestic and foreign affairs. The cabinet is made up of the Vice president and the 15 executive departmental heads. They include the secretary for Commerce, Education, and Health among others. All other 14 departments are headed by secretaries except the Justice Department headed by the Attorney General.  It is formed in Article II section two of the American constitution. All members of the cabinet serve the pleasure of the president who can dismiss them at any time. They can also be impeached by the house of the representatives in case they commit crimes such as bribery, treason among others. Secretaries are not subjected to term limits or elections instead some of them even turn over and work with the new governments.

Government Corporations

These are companies that are owned, acquired and sponsored by the government and have the independence of a private business. They are headed by the board of directors. The president appoints the director who is afterward approved by the cabinet. These agencies receive funds to serve the purposes of the public. Government-owned cooperation are entities formed by the government to carry out commercial activities on behalf of the state. Government sponsored cooperation those that are created by the state to make available and provide low-cost credit.   Examples are the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, National Aeronautics, and Space administration among others.

Presidential Commissions

Presidential Commission is a special task force formed by the president to do a special investigation, research or accomplish a specific task. After the investigation, they table the report to the president advising him on particular problems or issues. The report from the commission assists in determining political or administrative priorities to help in administrative decision making. They also provide information for the development of laws and legislation. An example of a presidential commission is the Commission on Civil Rights.

Roles of Presidential Commissions

They carry out specific research and special investigations to complete specific tasks as assigned by the president.

They generate a report from the specific investigations assigned and table them to the president for directives.

The federal administrative rules are derived from the president, independent regulatory agencies and the executive branch agencies. The agencies have got the authority to create administrative rule through the laws that are enacted by the Congress. The agencies act as both quasi-judicial and legislative entities in the creation and promulgation of the regulations.
