Indonesia Proposal

Indonesia Proposal

Indonesia tends to fit in as a country of study for this unit. It is a sovereign state located in Southeast Asia. The country has the largest economy in this region, and it is one of the emerging markets in the world’s economy. Currently the country is working towards enhancing economic development in various ways.

Among the things that make it favourable for this study is its population. In 2013, the population was estimated to be 250,585,668 (Khan, 2013). Previously, it has been argued that high populations are among the reasons why developing countries are having problems in promoting economic development. This is due to the gap that exists between the rich and the poor. Increase in GDP does not necessarily mean an improved living standard to all citizens.

Another reason that makes it favourable is how the government has used Millennium Development Goals in all phases of development. Adhering to these goals provides a favourable opportunity of realising economic development. A good example is how the National Medium-Term Development Plan of 2004-2009 and 2010-2014 has contributed positively towards poverty eradication (Khan, 2013).

Other factors that make the country favourable for study are its environmental and agricultural issues.  Various agricultural issues include rice policy, slow growth in agricultural value-added, decentralisation of local government, commercialisation of agriculture and poverty alleviation in rural areas. Agriculture accounts for more 14% of the country’s GDP yet individuals living in rural areas are most affected by poverty (Khan, 2013). On the environmental aspect, there are several issues experienced due to rapid industrialisation and high population. These issues are given lower priority due to presence of under-resourced governance and high poverty levels.

These issues make Indonesia a favourable case study in an attempt to get a clear understanding of economic development. It will be essay to ascertain what ought to be done in order to actualize development.
