Outline
Topic: Cars
General purpose: To inform the audience about cars
Specific purpose: To educate the audience about the history, evolution, and future of cars.
Thesis: From the simplistic designs of cars established to improve transportation, cars have evolved in terms of designs, models, and efficiency, yet manufacturers are still looking for new and innovative ways to better the efficiency and sustainability of the cars.
I. Introduction
A. Attention getter
Did you know that as of this moment, approximately one billion cars are being used all around the world? A vehicle can also be referred to as an automobile, which is a combination of two phrases, auto (Greek) and mobile (a French word). For most people, having a car is mainly associated with the convenience of transportation. However, for some individuals, a car is a lifestyle that provides insight into the personality of the owner. Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot did the first car creation in the form of a steam-powered tricycle in 1769.
B. Rationale
Developing an understanding of the history and evolution of cars helps to appreciate the current trends in the automobile industry. Also, analyzing the evolution timeline of cars can help forecast future trends.
C. Thesis statement
From the simplistic designs of cars established to improve transportation, cars have evolved in terms of designs, models, and efficiency, yet manufacturers are still looking for new and innovative ways to better the efficiency and sustainability of the cars.
D. Preview of main points
1. First will be a discussion about the history of cars.
2. My second point of focus will involve the evolution of automobiles.
3. Lastly, I will provide insight into the future of cars.
II. Body
Based on a historical analysis, the car was invented to transport passengers, with the most practical vehicle in history being Karl Benz’s invention, which used a gasoline-powered internal-combustion engine.
A. The idea of automobiles was derived as an improvement from the historical horse carriages
According to a book titled A social history of American automobile design, cars can be seen to represent much more than a transportation aid.
History also shows that cars have contributed significantly towards social change, especially in the 1920s.
Transition
From the original steam-powered tricycle, cars have evolved to result in improved balance, and steering and through great innovations in technology, cars are now changing from reliance on petroleum fuel to electric power.
B. Incredible innovations have changed the automobile industry significantly over the past decades.
The evolution of cars has for a long time been based on the appearance of design, and functions of the vehicle.
Having been developed solely for the transportation of people, cars eventually evolved to be used as sporting tools, by incorporating the four-wheel function for off-road races.
“Audi proved the Quattro’s performance potential by entering and dominating the sport of rallying, where its four-wheel drive was a key asset.”(McIlroy 1).
Despite the changes or evolution of cars over time, the basics in terms of steering, the combustion engine, and gearbox operate at a relatively similar principle, with the innovations being focused on creating a car that people are willing to buy.
Transition
Electric cars are the future and are a significant evolution necessitated by the need to address environmental concerns relating to global warming.
C. The future of automobiles is promising as it seeks to address present challenges related to safety and will improve the driving experience to be more fun.
In the next five to ten years, technological innovations will significantly change how human beings drive cars.
It is expected that the future cars will be smarter and will be driverless cars, meaning that the automobiles will be in a position to park themselves and assess the alertness of the drivers, making the vehicles safer than what we have today.
Future cars will also engage technologies that will ensure cars can communicate with each other to avoid collisions.
“Thanks to on-board computers that operate everything from the stereo and navigation to the brakes and accelerator, the era of “big data” is coming to the automobile.” (Valdes-Dapena 1).
III. Conclusion
A. Review of thesis and main points
Thesis: From the simplistic designs of cars established to improve transportation, cars have evolved in terms of designs, models, and efficiency, yet manufacturers are still looking for new and innovative ways to better the efficiency and sustainability of the cars.
Main points
1. First will be a discussion about the history of cars.
2. My second point of focus will involve the evolution of automobiles.
3. Lastly, I will provide insight into the future of cars.
B. Memorable thought
Car Companies such as Ford and Toyota invest so much on the development of automobile innovations and inventions to create a product that is pleasing to the customer. However, it is surprising to note that 95% of a car’s lifetime is spent on parking, whereas the remaining percentage of the time cars are in operation result in global warming. Despite the potential for new technologies to address the environmental and safety challenges caused by vehicles, it is important to look into simpler transportation solutions such as the bicycle.
C. Thanking the audience
