Behavior

She cuts her arms and wrists frequently.

Antecedent and setting events

Gina cut her arms and wrists when the staff are not attending to her.

Consequences

After cutting herself, Gina walks to the office and shows the staff her cuts. The staff scolds her and then bandage her cuts.

Function of behavior

It is a positive reinforcement

Justification

This is a positive reinforcement since Gina is getting something desirable from her behavior. She desires the attention of the staff, and she is getting it by cutting her wrists and arms. She does not indulge in this behavior when the staff is around her.

 

Jack

Behavior

Refuses to read aloud in class, and he throws his book at a peer.

Antecedent and setting events

Being called to read aloud in class and the teacher continues to request that he reads even after saying “No”.

Consequence

The teacher tells him that he has lost his chance to read, and moves to the next student.

Function of behavior

It is a negative reinforcement

Justification

This is because Jack is avoiding something that he considers to be undesirable. He does not want to read aloud, but wants to remain sited quietly on his seat.
