Behavior

Gina tends to frequently cut her wrists and arms.

Antecedent and Setting Events

Gina’s behavior culminates when she is not receiving attention from the hospital’s staff. She cuts herself when the staff are by themselves in the break room or when they are attending on other residents.

Consequences

When Gina cuts her wrists and arms she normally gets the attention of the relevant staff. Upon seeing the wounds, the staff scold her and take the initiative to bandage the cuts.

Function of Behavior

This is a positive reinforcement.

Justification for the Function

As a result of her actions, Gina is obtaining something pleasant (desirable) hence making this a positive reinforcement. The hospital’s staff attend to her after she has wounded herself hence helping to fulfill her desires of attention. As a result, the behavior of cutting her wrists and arms is likely to continue so long as it helps her to get the attention of the hospital staff.

 

JACK

Behavior

Jack refused to read aloud in class and also threw his book at his peer.

Antecedent and Setting Events

He refused to read aloud when called upon to do so by the teacher by either saying “No” or shaking his head no. He threw his book at a peer after the teacher insisted even after he had said “No”.

Consequence

Ms. Hanaike informs Jack that he has lost the chance to read and moves on to the next student.

Function of Behavior

This is a negative reinforcement

Justification for the Function

Jack is trying to escape/avoid something that he finds undesirable. Refusing to read makes the teacher to move to the next person, and this brings satisfaction to Jack since he does not have to read.
