Learning to Critique Photographs

Image 1

This photograph is of a landfill that is full of used tires. It is a landscape photograph because the photographer integrates elements of environmental photography with nature photography. The primary subject matter in the picture is environmental degradation. Notably, the photographer sets the image in black and white so that it can be seen differently as compared to colored photographs. The monochromatic style in black and white lets the viewers focus on the contrast of the scene to pick out the essential parts.

Additionally, it brings out the texture and shape of the items in the photograph more clearly. The photo is shot at a close distance to add perspective to the picture. I think the photographer wanted to capture how poor waste disposal is damaging the natural beauty of the earth’s landscape. The photo induces a feeling of expiry when we look at the surface how it has lost its appeal. The photo tells a story of transformation, by looking at the photo the viewer can create a mental picture of how the landscape was before its transformation to a disposal ground for old tires. I consider the photo to be objective because the viewer can build their judgment and opinions regarding the photo. Effectively, the picture tries to solve the problem of pollution by showing the extent of pollution.

Image 2

The photo is of two groups of teenagers; in the foreground, one teenager is holding a cigarette while in the background, another teenager is playing. The photograph is a portrait photograph because it shows the faces of the people in the photo.  The main subject reflected in the picture is teenage and drug-use particularly smoking. The image is set in black and white because colors at times tend to take away the context of a photo. The distance in the photo is short to focus on the subject of the picture.  The angle of the shot is from the height of the photographer to enable the photographer level well with the target.  I think the photographer wanted to inspire the conversation on teenagers and drug use.  The focus on the teenager lets the viewers establish the age of the teenager and reflect on the impact of cigarette smoking on the youth. The photo builds a narrative and also creates a conversation that may try to solve the problem indicated in the picture. The photo is somewhat subjective because it uses earlier formulated conclusions to build opinions. The photo attempts to solve the problem of drug use in teenagers by suggesting conversations that may lead to recognizing teenage drug use as a mainstream problem.
