“Me Before You” Book Review

“Me Before You” a novel by JojoMoyes is aneccentric modern day love story. It shows you how love can come to you in the most unexpected way. Moyes captured the characters in a manner that clearly painted a picture of each one, especially Louisa. She is the main character in the book and you get the privilege to learn her loves and fears that makes her into the genuine person she is.

Louisa is far from ordinary but lives in aconventionalregime. She grew up in a little town in England and has never been eager to leave. She lives with her loving family who is always struggling to make ends meet (Moyes, 2012). Louisa is content with bakery job and would never see it any other way. Until the bakery closes down and she is forced out of her comfort zone. This is when her life flips upside down and truly makes Louisa grow up.

After desperately looking for a job Louisa decides to take a job offer to take care of Mrs. Traynor’s son, Will. He is a quadriplegic and the book completely gives you a surprise. The carefree Louisa has to grow not only courage, while caring for Will, but also patience. At the beginning Will was no piece of cake, he gave Louisa a very hard time. No matter what Louisa still showed up and never gave up on Will. Eventually things became lighter and they truly built a strong friendship (Moyes, 2012). Louisa was determined to change Will’s perspective on his life. As you sink into the depths of Louisa and Will’s present, past, and hopes for the future, you learn the value of life and how fragile it is.

What I enjoyed the most was the attention to every detail Moyes put in each character. From their appearance to their minds you could really create a mental image of each one especially Louisa. From her strange obsession with bumble bee tights to her melodramatic personality. Every detail was what made them special. This book took me for a rollercoaster ride. When Will and Louisa had their good days and would joke around I could imagine the look on Will’s face and just imagining him smile would make me happy. When Louisa was scared or would cry I would cry with her. I was able to have a glimpse of such wholesome souls and the beauty of selflessness. Moyes made it impossible for me to put the book down and I cannot wait to read the sequel “Me After You” and continue with the journey.

The novel is very emotional where the author creates a scenario where a person sets aside her interests for the sake of another person’s happiness.  It is a book that can make one cry since some of the situations in the novel are provocative o tears.  Despite the rudeness and temper from Will, Louisa is determined to ensure that he lives a life that he aspired to live. Moyes never uses a lofty language and ensures that the character’s flaws are exposed. Though the book is quite emotional, I find it tempting to re-read it even a hundred times.
