Mental Disorders

There are many disease and disorders which affect the mind of human beings. Some of them are minor (may not be noticeable) whereas others are acute. The serious ones need to subjected to medical attention before they become uncontrollable in the future. The less severe ones may not be so harmful to the affected person although they too need to be addressed. The correct definition of mental illness is any malady which changes the mind, emotions, behavior or personality. in this essay; I will discuss dementia, delirium as well as schizophrenia as some of the diseases which are detrimental to the mental health of a person.

Delirium is a mental disorder which causes a person to have a severe mental disturbance, incoherence, illusions, and acute restlessness. The affected person is also characterized by much confusion and minimized environmental awareness. The causes of this malady are chronic illnesses, drug withdrawal or intoxication, medication, surgery or other infections. Dementia is another mental sickness and cannot be described as a disease but a combination of symptoms linked to a reduction in thinking skills or memory enough to make a person less active in the dispensation of his or her daily activities. 60-80% of this condition is attributed to Alzheimer’s disease. A dementia patient faces difficulties in language and communication, impaired attention and reasoning among others.

Schizophrenia, on the other hand, is a severe and chronic mental disorder which affects a person’s thinking. The patients may have a characteristic of seeming to lose connection with reality. The symptoms include impaired cognitive skills, hallucinations, delusion and agitated movements of the body among others. It is important to note that this malady is not as common as the others.
