Pathophysiology and Pharmacology

In this case, the subject is a 23-year-old female who experiences depression due to her work. During initial diagnosis, it was evident that an imbalance in the production of Serotonin levels was experienced by the subject. Consequently, Serotonin functions were adversely affected and therefore the transmission of signals between various parts of the brain were impaired. To treat this condition, Zoloft 20 mg was prescribed daily. Zoloft contains Sertraline which boosts Serotonin levels that improve mood and manage the symptoms experienced in depression(Halaris & Leonard, 2017).

Additional Analysis

According to the national guidelines for treatment of depression, patients who have begun taking anti-depressants need to be closely monitored to gauge response to treatment. Moreover, the continued monitoring allows for the management of side effects that come with the drug. In this particular case, a visit was scheduled regularly based on the convenience of the patient because of her working schedule.

Follow-Up

During a subsequent visit, the patient exhibited significant improvement in mood and general activity. However, the subject admitted to some common side effects that accompany the use of Sertraline in the treatment of depression (Jorge, Acion, Burin, & Robinson, 2016). She experienced a change in sleeping patterns that were characterized by increased sleepiness.

Quality

Regarding the care of patients with similar symptoms and history, it is essential for a medical practitioner to consider the unique situations that influence their condition. For instance, in this case, the patient was a female who was depressed in an office setting. However, national statistics indicate that work-related stress is mainly prevalent in men, thereby making this case unique.

Coding and Billing

  • ICD-10 F06.31: Mood disorder due to known physiological condition with depressive features.
