Minimizing Negative Effects of the Internet

Negative effects of internet

Advance in technology has been on an increase in the recent past.  Some of the most notable technological advancements are the latest increase in the internet use. Internet use has been on a tremendous increase both socially and economically. This increase use of internet has been associated with a lot of benefits. However, internet use has also been associated with numerous negative effects. It is the responsibility of every internet user to ensure that negative effects related to its use are limited to manageable levels.

One of the most detracting vice in the internet use is that a lot of time is consumed while on internet. This arises as a result of increase in internet addiction. Internet addiction refers to excessive computer use socializing, gaming, and online shopping among others.  In order to reduce this vice, it is essential for the concerned parties to unearth whether the increase in time consumption is based purely on internet addiction or as a result of other collaborating of factors. This is because the actions which keep internet users online can also be done even in the absence of internet(Cooper, 2002).

The most important step in reducing time consumption issue on the internet is proper planning. Being glued to a computer screen is mainly a choice by the user. One can effectively decide to keep off the computer and only log in when necessary. The internet use has been a broad source of information. Most of the people use internet on researches and getting other valuable information. It is the responsibility of the internet user to plan accordingly as to when to check e-mails and other necessary information. Spontaneous login in especially to social sites should be completely discouraged(Cooper, 2002).

Another essential way through which time wasting can be reduced is trying alternative means to achieving the same objective. It is always advisable to switch off your computer if the task in question has other means. This is a very important step as it helps in increased productivity and reduces chances of getting sidetracked (Smith, 2001).

To some internet users, it is always difficult to keep off unnecessary internet usage. For such a group of people who just cannot control what they do on the internet, it is essential that they block time-wasting internet sites. Some internet sites such as Facebook and twitter are known to be the leading tie wasting sites recently. To those who find it difficult to plan internet use, they can as well completely block such sites completely from their computers. This can greatly help in avoiding sidetracking and time wasting.

Excessive use of internet can also be a main cause of sidetracking to a working person. This can be detrimental to the individual’s production capacity. To increase productivity, all essential measures should be undertaken to ensure that the workers or individuals keep their sights strictly to their objectives. One the best ways that one can adopt to make this a success is by regulating login into certain sites(Smith, 2001).

Checking of e-mails and other social accounts like face book or twitter should not be spontaneous. This is because once people login to e-mail accounts, there is high possibility that one may side track from the main objectives. Replying of e-mails, reading of previous e-mails, deleting spams among others may lead to unnecessary sidetracking. Unnecessary chats on Facebook and twitter can also lead to sidetracking. To effectively minimize this, it is advisable to stipulate and set aside time for doing such things. For instance, one can decide to perform check e-mail and face book accounts in the evenings to avoid sidetracking. However, this should not be the case if you constantly rely on these e-mails and other social sites for business. The other less important but sidetracking sites to your main business should be accorded such treatment.

Social relationships are another vital aspect related to internet usage. However, at times the exercise has very adverse effects. Most of people have had a great platform for online socializing. This has been facilitated through the increasing use of social sites like face book and twitter. The technological advancement has gone a step higher after the introduction of Skype. This has taken social relationship a notch higher as the correspondents can easily exchange views all over the world and can see each other online(Figliola, 2010).

These relationships which are nurtured online can at times be very dangerous. This is mainly because they at times lead to loss of morals. Illicit business such as drug trafficking, prostitution, and child trafficking has been accelerated as a result of this increased socialization.  A lot of time is also lost while chatting by the friends acquired online. Excessive socialization leads to great wastage of time.

In order to minimize such effects, strict measures should be taken to ensure that aspects from bad socialization do not occur. For instance, government should put in place rules and regulations that govern the social internet sites (Smith, 2001). There should also be bodies that closely monitor the online socialization to reduce the negative effects associated with it. These are just but a few among other measures that can greatly help reduce the negative effects of internet.
