MODULE 5: SLAVERY

In august 21, 1831, Nat Turner, the son of an Africa born slave led a rebellion against the slave owners leading to the death of 55 whites people. Several other insurrections had been reported in the Caribbean and North Carolina by the media. However, the Turners uprising was in no way connected to these other insurrections. At an early age, Turner was sharp minded and he learnt to read and write. He became a star among his fellow slaves and most of them listened to him. He often devoted hid time to praying and with time he declared himself a prophet of God. He appealed to his fellow slaves that God had appointed him to lead them out of slavery.  With the knowledge of reading and writing, he used to quote the bible often. His ultimate goal was to lead the slaves away from slavery but there were no chances of success because the whites were armed with guns while the rebellion used machetes and axes.

The slave masters exerted overwhelming pressure over those held in bondage through several ways. One of the ways was through demotions and separations from family. For slaves who had earned good will from their masters, they were promoted over their fellow slaves but to show power, the masters would them demote them at will. Most of the slaves were also separated from their families and the slave masters knew that they would do anything to be together with their families and so used this against them. Despite the control, there are those slaves who had strong self will to survive. Some slaves just worked hard even after being demoted to earn the good will from their slaves. Some slaves even ended up being successful later in life the through gaining the trust of their masters and then escaping when presented with a goods chance.
