National emergency at the border

President Trump has declared a national emergency at the border to allow access to billions of dollars to facilitate the building of a border wall. According to the president, having a border wall will protect the country from the flow of drugs, criminals and illegal immigrants from Mexico which threatens the national security. However, I do not find this argument by the president convincing enough to spend such a massive amount of money. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration report of 2015, the bulk of the drugs that are brought into the United States across the southwest are sneaked through legal ports. They are hidden in tractor-trailers or cars and is not true that a wall would stop search illegal drugs entering the United States since they will still penetrate through available legal ports. The same happens to illegal immigrants; they get into the U.S through legitimate entries and overstay their visas.

On the issue of criminals entering the country, the border wall would not stop them from entering the United States. According to the U.S Customs and Border Protection, in the quarter of 2018 report, only about six immigrants at the U.S- Mexico border ports of entry who were suspected terrorists were encountered. The same information indicated that the majority of the immigrants suspected as terrorists were stopped on the northern border the U.S shares with Canada. Therefore, a U.S-Mexico border wall will not help to prevent criminals from entering the country through the northern border who are the majority. On the illegal immigrants, experts on immigration put it clear that they take part in tax paying. Therefore, stopping their coming into the country will strip off the country billions of money from the taxes they pay.
