NUR 401 module reflection

I have learned various things from the NUR 401 module.  For instance, nursing theories refer to the multiple approaches that nurses use to formulate their goals, values, and beliefs I the provision of healthcare services.  The Need Theory by Virginia Henderson is one of the nursing theories. The theory states that nurses need to take care of the patients till they are better and can take care of themselves; need to be committed to serving the patients; and that they should have an adequate college education to deal with the various aspects of sick individuals. Healthcare informatics is another concept learned in this module. The practice involves nurses using electronic equipment to record and keeps patient data in the course of service delivery.  Safety in healthcare is the prevention of any harm to the patients while quality refers to the types of care given to patients and their contribution towards a better outcome after intervention.

In my professional nursing practice, I experienced a communication challenge with an Asian woman. The patient did not understand English probably due to her age and the fact that she was a visitor in the country.  Luckily, one of the doctors in my facility was Asian, and he acted as an interpreter between the two of us. Finally, I was able to write down the patient ’s health information and referred her to the doctor who gave a diagnosis of her ailment.

Four weeks have elapsed since my last assessment on NUR 401. I believe I have addressed almost all my weaknesses in the course. These include learning to communicate with elderly patients, improving my speed when entering patient data and generally developing an unbiased attitude towards all the patients.
