Occupational Safety

In this week we learned about pre-use inspection which are the measures that one should check before using any machinery and confirm that it’s in good working condition. Visual inspection, testing of the operations of the item, using a checklist and making sure that if they have problems they are taken to trained technicians for repair are some of the pre-use inspection activities. These are very important because they prevent unexpected accidents and also bring about timely repairs before the damage becomes beyond repair.

Musculoskeletal pains occur when we don’t handle heavy metal and machinery the way we are supposed to. Ergonomics is the science that tries to find the perfect fit between a worker and work. Causes of musculoskeletal pains include age, unsafe working conditions. This can be prevented by the acquisition of ergonomically designed tools at the said place of work. Most of these pains are non-traumatic and are not caused by being hit by an object or hard metal. Instead, they are caused by the way the workers lifts materials or the style of their bodies while lifting heavy objects.

Lastly, we also learned about the different ways that the government has provided as measures and guidelines on how to handle materials at the place of work. One of the measures is that of having secure storage for equipment where they are safe and cannot collapse and cause injury to those nearby. Clearance signs should also be put in place in case there is a clearance process that is going ahead in the area to inform those unaware. Other measures include those of guarding, rolling railroads and housekeeping.
