The criminal justice system has also made use of the concepts of organizational behavior in its functionality. This paper is going to study that application through understanding the concepts, elements, challenges, and opportunities of organizational behavior in the field of criminal justice (Feeley, 2017).

The basic concepts of organizational behavior and how it relates to the field

Organizational behavior comprises of various fundamental concepts which are; perception, individual differences, whole person, motivation, involvement, and human dignity. All these concepts are also applicable in the organizational behavior in the field of criminal justice. First and foremost is the perception of the employees, which is the way an individual interprets things. If a policy gets introduced, some employees may accept the policy while others may reject it based on their perception. This concept is vital in coming up with new strategies on how to best run the criminal justice system. For example, the law enforcement officers department may decide on how best to do patrol, but different people will have different opinions. It is upon the head of the unit to create positive perceptions for them to achieve their goals (Feeley, 2017).

There is also the concept of individual differences, whereby different people have different attributes both physically and psychologically. Some people may be black, white, short, quick, fast, aggressive, hot-tempered and polite. All these differences bring about differences in capacity in terms of comprehension, judgment, and learning. The leaders of the criminal justice system agencies should consider these differences when allocating responsibilities for them to get the best out of them (King and Lawley, 2016).

The concept of the whole person is also crucial in the criminal justice system as far as organizational behavior is concerned.to get the best out of an individual the employee’s personal life, feelings and emotions should get considered. Therefore unless that individual is satisfied, he will not give the best of his services. For the criminal justice system components to work effectively, the whole person attributes such as emotions and satisfaction are essential. The leaders of the agencies should ensure they consider their subordinates life for them to work skillfully and competently.

The concept of motivation is quite critical for any agency that wants to achieve its objectives and mandate. In our case for the criminal justice to be in a better position of bringing criminals to book, judging them and correcting their behavior, they must ensure that all components are motivated to be it the judges, police and correctional officers. The motivation can through giving incentives and promotions to those that are working diligently, competently and skillfully. This aspect will change its organizational behavior, and the output will be fruitful (King and Lawley, 2016).

Besides that, there is the concept of involvement. This concept is primarily concerned with the empowerment of the employees or those working below someone. It is without a doubt that the work rate increases when people get involved in the work they are doing. This concept is possible through involving that person in the decision-making process. The result of such an action is giving the employee a sense of belonging. In the criminal justice system, the junior officers can also get involved in the decision-making process for their work rate to increase.

The other concept is the social system. An agency has different people, of varying levels with different skills working harmoniously to achieve a given goal. Therefore, the activities of each in an organization affect everyone. The way different departments of the criminal justice system interrelate and are interdependent shows that social networks are essential. Therefore the policy should apply the informal social system that encourages language, friendship and preferences good for their mandate (Feeley, 2017).

Elements of organizational behavior

There are various elements of the organizational behavior that influence how organizations run their business and achieve their goals. These elements are; goals, visions, missions, values, motivation, leadership, and communication. It is the role of the leaders in the criminal justice system to ensure that all the activities are gearing towards achieving the goals, mission, and visions they have put. The fundamental purpose of the agency is to make sure there is a safe community. It there has to instill values and philosophies geared towards achieving these goals in the mindset of its personnel.  The organization should set excellent and realistic goals, missions and visions which will serve as motivation to challenge the staff and all departments to work to achieve them. For example, there can be goals on reducing the crime rate, judging a given number of cases and also correcting given behaviors. Personnel will get challenged to achieve these goals if the leaders offer good leadership that promotes ambition (King and Lawley, 2016).

Challenges globalization brings to criminal justice

Globalization is the growth of businesses international fueled by development in technology and communication. Despite its importance, it has created a lot of challenges in criminal justice; for example, it has become hard for police to arrest criminals since they can move from one country to another quickly. This immigration allows criminals to stay away from the hands of justice as they get some asylum in foreign countries (Passas, 2017).

Globalization has resulted in increased crimes associated with transnational trade. These crimes include smuggling and production of abolished goods. Some goods may be illegal in one country and illegal in another. This aspect makes it hard to monitor the movement of such goods hence even dealing with those crooks is had (King and Lawley, 2016).

Opportunities globalization brings to criminal justice

First and foremost, due to globalization, the International Criminal Justice was established. Today criminals from all over the country can be arrested in any part of the world and get presented to an international criminal court. At ICC the internal laws and statutes get used in convicting offenders (Passas, 2017).

Also, there is the development of international police called the Interpol who have the permission to move across the world and arrest any criminal for the ICC. This police under the United Nations help a lot in arresting international criminals and thereby accrued from globalization (Passas, 2017).
