Why Study Families

This is a very interesting question. I would say that the family is part of the treatment system. Understanding the patients includes understanding their backgrounds, which can only be determined from the perspective of the family. Studying the family can inform the nurse much about the patient.

Imagine a patient who comes in to the hospital in a critical condition. We as nurses solely depend on the family’s version of what is wrong with the patient. The patient at this point has no say in the matter.  At this point, the family becomes crucial in the treatment of the patient. In addition when taking care of the patient, one has to interact with the family one and now. The family is crucial in the recovery of the patient.

Dealing with families is complicated. Families are different with different cultural backgrounds. It is important for one to know how to handle these families to be able to take care of the patient.  The family is a major system of the patient and cannot be separated from the patient.  What is important is understanding the dynamics of a specific family and then integrating them in the treatment of the patient.  This makes it crucial to study about family. Understanding the family is the first step of treatment.  The family is the major support system of the patient and the presence of the family in the treatment process is very crucial. I decided to study family and family nursing to be able to take better care of my patients through their families.

Response to Rosalba Balderas

Great discussion Rosalba, working in the ICU can be hectic and very stressful considering the questions asked by the family members of the patient.  It also limits one to the time available for the patients.  Private nursing on the other hand is not hectic. One works at a considerable place and emergencies not common. I agree that in these two jobs, the family is a major characteristic. In nursing, one has to interact with the family members of the patient in one or the other. It is thus important to know how to deal with different families.

Response to Rachael Adams

Good thinking Rachael, you can tell much about a person from his/her family. I agree that the family members can be very helpful in identify the major symptoms. I imagine somebody is brought to the hospital in a critical state. We always depend on the family members to explain the symptoms and what have been happening to the patient.  Family also helps a patient to keep up with the medication. After a patient leaves hospital, he/she is at the full hands of the family members. It is therefore important to understand the families to be able to understand the needs of the patient better.

Response to Nicole Alvarado

Great view Nicole, treating a patient includes looking at all their support systems to understand them better.  The family is the major support system one has. You can understand much about people from their families. Understanding ones family can help in determining how to better take care of the patient. If a patient cannot handle himself/herself, the family members are educated on how to take care of the patient. I would say the family members are part of the treatment system.  The patient cannot be separated from the family. This makes i9t crucial for one to learn about the family.
