Narrative poetry is evident in several poetry works by Robert Frost. Nevertheless, the poem ‘’ Design’’ represents a good example of a narrative among all the poems we have studied in this module. The poem takes a form of a story that can be easily memorized and delivered orally to the audience. Unlike other of his poems, this poem is quite short and has only two stanzas. The first and second line describes a white and fat spider that is on a flower. It is imperative noting that the speaker in this poem can describe the main characters that include spider, moth, and heal-all. The speaker gives a detailed description that keeps the reader engaged throughout the poem. Besides, the speaker also moves from description to reflection. Through the tone, the reader can get in the speaker’s mind and view him as he tries to ponder on essential aspects of life. In Lines nine to twelve, the speaker tries to answer his question “What but design of darkness to appall?” He answers ‘’If design governs in a thing so small.’’ From this answer, the reader can understand the speculative nature of the speaker as depicted by the word ‘’If’’ which signifies reservations on the answer. Also, of importance to note is the wide use of imagery and figurative language in this poem. Through the narrative, the reader can be able to identify the spider and moth in real life situations. The use of color ’’white’’ may also symbolize innocence. All this information is conveyed through a narrative poem.
