From a social perspective, I can identify myself as an introvert and realist. Most often I tend to turn inwards mentally and avoid a large group of people. I value the time I spend alone. I can tell that I am an introvert due to the hard to shut off monologue, doing my best when I think alone, and feeling lonelier in a crowd than when I am alone. At the same time, when in a network, I feel like I am faking everything and have no desire to be the center of attention. Most essential, I am someone who can look at things as they are in life and deal with them most effectively. Someone may think that I expect good things to happen, but the reality is, I use facts and past events, instead of hopeful feelings and wishes to predict the future.

Economically, I come from alower middle class. We had had a considerable share of struggle when we first moved to Texas from California. My mum lost her job and dad’s salary was not enough to cater to the needs of the family. But right now, we are trying to adjust.

Politically, I am associated with the Democratic Party. I am aliberal/ democrat. I associate myself with this party because ofits values and policies it stands for. The party’s philosophy of modern liberalism advocates for economic and social equality and the welfare of the state. I believe in a political doctrine that puts protection and enhancing the freedom of individuals at a central issue of politics. The government is significant to protect people from being harmed by others, and at the same, I believe that the government also has a possibility of posing a threat. To be a Democrat, it means accepting that the will of the people is the primary source of government legitimacy.

The political structure in the UScan be described as a representative democracy where citizens elect their representatives to the state, local, and national government. The representatives are entitled with the responsibility of creating laws that govern the US society. Even though nothing in the US law requires it in practice, the US political system is dominated by political parties. I feel like this political system was made for the whites. Therefore, blacks feel a sense of segregation. I have not developed a feeling of belongingto the systembecause of the thinking that it was designed to fail the blacks. Democrats tend to win their seats with big majorities in some few districts, but the Republicans manage to prevail by narrower margins in a large number of regions. With the two-party systems in place, the electoral system gives the Republicans an advantage over the Democrats. This poses an aspect of racial discrimination in the political system. Some people see blacks and think that they are not Americans. Well, I was born in America and raised here. Even though our ancestors originated from Africa, we are now living in America and must be treated as American citizens and accorded equal rights. Some people ask me whether I am a hyphenated American. The fact that I am an Africa American makes me a hyphenated American.

In certain aspects, the political system seems right and has some positives. I appreciate the fact that it gives us the freedom to do what we want and it does not control what we do as long as it is in accordance to the law and is not deemed immoralor unacceptable to the public. In America, everybody can make a life for themselves. However, the political structure gets it wrong in certain aspects such as the element of racial discrimination that has become a culture in the political system. I would place the blame on the founding fathers of the nation whoinstilled the perception of racial discrimination in our political system. Even though this system allows us to become anything we want, it makes it highly difficult to succeed as a minority. Even though the level of discrimination has reduced due to the recent campaigns for equality, there are still some elements of prejudice towards the minority groups making the provision of equal rights and opportunities a seemingly distant dream. I feel that the system was designed to keep minorities frustrated, in jail, or keep the family brokenso that their children can grow up and exemplify the same culture.

To ensure that the system becomes better, it should be made in such a way that it gives equal opportunities for all to succeed. No minority would be singled out, neglected, discriminated against because of color and everyone would get the same opportunity to make life better for them and their children. In America, all people must be treated equally and have unalienable rights. Without removing the element of discrimination against the minority groups, the system will continue to remain biased.

My ideology to eliminate the present system would be to start over once again. However, I don’t think it would work out before the current system has formed a culture that is difficult to uproot. The culture is passed from one generation to the next, but gradual steps should be made to change the mentality of the current generation, sending a message that the old system is biased and does not fit into the modern society we want.
