Pit Bulls Social Problem

Introduction

Evading the issue of pit bull is not as simple as avoiding owning the breed. They are time and again in the news for the bad reason where they frequently invade the lives of people or other pets leading to bloody result. As a result, many people have classified the issue of pit bulls as a social problem that should be addressed immediately. But the question is, is it the media hysteria, bad breed or irresponsible ownership that has led to persistence of the pit bull issue.  I opine that the problem is neither the breed nor the media but irresponsible ownership is to blame for the escalating problem. The media has a duty of what happens in the society while the breed is a product of the environment where it is brought up.

How to address the problem

As aforementioned, the issue of pit bulls has been cited as a social problem for a long time and it’s prudent that the issue is addressed once and for all. It is essential to note that dogs have been bred for many different jobs for a long time. Nevertheless, they have been bred primarily for the purpose of being family companion. It is for this reason that the breed should be treated with compassion. Although they are also bred as working dogs, bull bait and dog fight, it is the responsibility of the breed owner to ensure that he trains his dogs on peaceful co-existence with the surrounding environment. If these dogs are treated with compassion, it goes without saying that they will also be harmless to the society. On the same note, the breed owners must also be very careful while identifying the breed to ensure that they get the right pit bull.

Besides the irresponsible owners, the community also has a role to play in addressing the problem of pit bull in the society. To start with, the members of the society should be concerned with their own safety and that of their properties. They should always avoid interacting with free roaming breeds that could lead to aggression. Also they should take care of other pets to ensure that they don’t get into contact with the breed. The government also has a role of ensuring that only the right breed of pit bull is bred. Stringent rules to deal with irresponsible owners should also be put in place to ensure that no one rears the breed recklessly and lead to fatalities. In essence, pit bull is a working dog as well as a good companion and it would not be wise to eliminate the breed.
