Place, territory and space

In combining the multispectral views regarding place, territory and space I would be able to define the relationship between ‘the city’ as a territory’ and ‘the city’ as social space.’ The concept of a territory relating to ‘the city’ highlights demarcation and mapping of an urban region. A city is built by people who interact- socialize through economic relationship. The concept of mapmaking entails cultural, social, political, and other entities in the social place are labeled by the cultural and sensorial filters. In conceiving a city the interaction between the inhabitants within that territory is as important as the city itself.

Around the globe, cities crop up based on technological advancement and the economic need of the people of that particular place.  World cities are competing in terms of infrastructure and other technological developments. A city may be conceived and planned based on spatial features which are essential for social, formal and economic aspect of the urban life. For instance, Brasilia was planned and constructed through synthesis of modern spatial technologies. The urban design and architectures captures the social need of the people or community that is supposed to live in the territory. Therefore, ‘the city’ as territory’ entails demarcations that are important for administration purposes in an urban set up. The territory helps in notifying where various government services and other public services are enjoyed by the society within the given jurisdiction.

City’ as a territory relates with the social space within the urban development. First, within the social space, there are different objectives that relate to one another in an urban set up. ‘The city’ as territory is vital in for provision for frameworks that are important in life including socio-economical and structural situations, buildings, education standards, family structures, habitat, and other resources which are important for the use of the public.  The territorial importance is that the administration of these services are centralized with ‘the city’ so that the social space can be enjoyed. The paradigm of socio-spatial interaction in connection with people in a given environment and their need of material goods found within a certain territory. In urban centers, people live according to what the need or their degree of dependence to the city center.

Family is very important in the social place, so in a city as territory family relations are considered by the inhabitants. People tend to stay close to their families so as to enjoy the social space and family bonding. In ‘the city’ as territory, planning is vital in demarcating areas where homes would be constructed so that families enjoy housing.

Locations of facilities enjoyed by inhabitants within a given city is very important and relates with the social perspective of a city. Facilities like schools, publics parks are always captured in the city territory and these are vital for the social space of a city. The spatial planning of a city must put in place these basic social requirements of inhabitants.

Social space entails economic ability of the inhabitances of a city. During conceptualization of a city as a territory and putting up boundaries within which the city is located, the economic sources like industries are planned for so that the socio-economic goal of a city is achieved. City is essential in giving employment to the inhabitants. Planning for shops, malls, transport system, industries and other sources of employment within the city territory helps in creation of jobs which in return is important for social relationship within the city space. Structures which enable economic empowerment within the city are vital in the social space. When an urban is being conceptualized, these systems are captured within the territory for socio-economic benefits.

Media is very important in the social space, communication and flow of information is very essential in a given city territory. When planning of a city, setting up of communication structures within the city is important within the city. Inhabitants would choose to live within any part of the city if they assured of being able to communicate. Technology companies come up with structures which only suits the city environment.

Lastly, ‘the city’ as territory determines the political landscape of an urban center. Politics in part of a social process that is in the social space of any city. Therefore, this highlights the close relation between ‘the city’ as a territory and ‘the city’ as social space.  The political process within the territory of a city affects the social space of inhabitants. The demarcations help in knowing which leader helps his or her community and where the border of which his or her mandate ends. In addition, administration structures like policing apparatus and other systems are set up within the territory of a city and that helps the social space in maintain law and order.
