Poetry Discussion

Prior reading this course, I never appreciated poetry. I just assumed that poetry was an art just for entertainment and passing the time. Nevertheless, after the two weeks of learning poetry, I have come to realize that poetry is written with an objective of consoling, encompassing a great power and appeal to delight the reader while heightening awareness of various situations and enlighten us in different aspects of life. It is only required that we think critically to understand and interpret the poems according to the intentions of the poet. For instance, the poem ‘’Range-finding’’ by Robert Frost is an example of how poetry is relevant to modern life (Mays 877). The poem possibly involves finding oneself or finding out that not all things are what they first seem. Frost uses nature in a way to discuss relationships that are prevalent in the real-life situations. Since the language used in poetry is not straight forward, it is the responsibility of the reader to think critically and derive sense from the message. For example in this poem, ‘’ The battle rent a cobweb diamond-strung’’ (1), the use of words “diamond-strung” could be speaking of a diamond necklace. As the poem comes to an end, there is the issue of a trap where the butterfly is held in the cobweb on a flower. ‘’The indwelling spider ran to greet the fly,’’(13) In essence the butterfly is attracted to the beauty of the flower and ends up being the prey. This can be compared to the dangers of falling in love just because of the earthly beauties and end up inregrets (Mays 897). To sum it up I have realized that poetry is an art designed to open our eyes, open our doors and welcome us into a bigger world, one of the possibilities we may never have dared to dream of.
