Proposal: Sweatshops

Working around India one thing that seems to stand out is the aspect of sweatshops. There is something that seems to stand out as a similarity in the sweatshop regime for the millions of workers worldwide. Researching on the labor industry around the Asian region, one thing that stood out was the different army of laborers. One would see male migrants endlessly circulating between factors and villages young women commuting daily to and from factories and youths facing the challenges of life. In the middle of all these commotions, the life of the sweatshops seems to stand out. According to the US Department of Labor, a sweatshop is a factory that violates more than two of the labor laws (Emmelhainz). The characteristics of the sweatshops in India include poor working conditions, unreasonable hours, unfair wages, child labor and even the lack of worker benefits.

As the society seeks to end the problem globalization seems to be catapulting it to another level. The opening of markets for products as a result of globalization has pushed most of the firm to compete with products from other regions. The desire for more profits ends up forcing the companies to take any measures that can reduce the cost of production and increase the profits margins. Thus these shops have been focused on profits at the expenses of the employee working conditions. The idea of a market economy makes it hard to deal with this problem (Emmelhainz). Besides, the free market gives room for the business to use means that are appropriate for their industry to make profits. Therefore it becomes hard to deal with this problem. Besides, the culture of the Indian people makes them more vulnerable to these issues. The society does not provide room for people to challenge their seniors even when they are mistreated. From my experience in the region, I empathize more with the children. They seem to bear the most prominent brand of working in the sweatshops.

Innovative idea

To be able to deal with this problem I intend to develop a work of music. The idea behind the work of music is to create awareness in this society on how the employees violate their rights. This work will seek to bring workers together so that they can start to know that they have a right to reasonable working conditions. I propose a musical composition that will talk more about the challenges that the people are going through and hoe them can rally for freedom.

The music will be instrumental in telling people that it is not right to work in a weak environment and get paid. Besides, there would be a focus on determining the society that children should not work in these factories. The idea is to change the perception of the Indian people so that they understand that it is not fair to be mistreated by your employers, yet one can fight against these vices.

The only difficulty I anticipate is that the factories might gang up to block such an attempt. The Sweatshops depend on the labor from the industries and thus an effort to stop this labor might not go well with them. They might try to find ways to block any movement that seeks to rally the people to champion for their rights.

The audience that I would be seeking to address is the international community at large. The challenge of child labor and poor working condition is not only an Indian problem but a worldwide issue. There is thus need for all to come out and deal with the issue.
