Psychological Disorders

Psychological Disorders

When people hear about psychological disorders, they expect something huge and dangerous such as a serial killer or psychopath.  However, as I have come to learn, some of the things we experience and assume are actually psychological disorders.

A good example is my friend’s sister. She was suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.  This is a disorder where a person has uncontrollable obsessions and compulsions that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.  She was younger than us but we attended the same school. However, she was making life really had for my friend and the family at large. First, she spent an entire morning in the bathroom. Her mother had to wake her very early in the morning so that she could have ample time to spend in the bathroom. She never used to shake hands with anyone.

In school, the teachers had a hard time controlling her. Anytime anyone looked sick in the class, she would storm out and would not come back. Nobody really seemed to understand that she was suffering from a disorder. I used to think that she was boastful given that she also never played with us for fear of germs.  However, when she was at grade 6, her mother decided to consult a psychologist and the truth was revealed. She started attending counselling sessions and she started improving. However, one year later the family had to move to a new neighbourhood and I cannot tell what happened to her. It is very intriguing to note that almost 50 million Americans suffer from different psychological disorders and most of them do not even know it.
