Why do some patients receiving the behavioral graded program incorporate the activities in the long run while other patients do not?
An appropriate research method to answer the research question
Qualitative research will be the preferred research method for this question. Qualitative research is used to gain an understanding of the reason behind an activity. It helps to provide insights into a specific problem or to develop hypothesis or ideas. Qualitative research will help solve the question by uncovering trends in thoughts and opinions taken by patients (Tolley et al., 2016).
Steps involved
Ten participants were selected by using the purposive sampling method. The patients were interviewed, and the results were decoded and analyzed using the grounded theory (Gentles et al., 2015). The interview has different themes that focus on aspects of related to behavioral graded activity, the character of the patient and personal experience.
Use of qualitative research method to answer the research question
The qualitative research method uses data and responses from interviewing the patients to conduct further analysis. From the interview responses, the research data are coded to determine the factors that influence long-term adherence to exercise (Tolley et al., 2016). The qualitative research shows the patients that use the behavior program effectively incorporate in their normal routines.
Conclusion
A qualitative research method is useful in answering the research question. However, when using this research method, only a few people are included in the research, who may not reflect the perception of the entire population. For instance, in this research process, there were only 10 participants. Furthermore, conducting the interviews is usually a time-consuming process. Unless the participants are selected randomly, this research method is prone to bias.
