Quality is the ability of an entity to satisfy the stated or implied needs measured against other entities of similar kind or degree.Conventionally, the quality of an object is determined through comparison with similar objects or the standard expectations of the type. In project planning and management, the quality of the final product is the ability of the output to meet its stipulated characteristics and expectations.Quality requires the final output of a process to satisfy the customer through conformance to specifications and fitness for use. Therefore, quality is the satisfaction of stakeholder’s expectations of a product.

One of the typical quality tools employed in quality planning is the Cause and Effect Analysis. The fishbone diagram, for instance, resembles the skeleton of a fish. The method uses a general cause and effect diagram which to show how various causes and sub-causes relate to creating potential projects and effects on a project. The cause and effect diagram is often used as a useful communication tool for brainstorming, especially when dealing with complex issues relating to the quality of products or the output of a project.

The model may be applied in the manufacturing industry. In the manufacture of leather products, the design can be used to analyze the appropriateness of the steps taken in the process. Also, the model observes whether there are maintenance issues with the machinery. Moreover, the supply of raw material is also a crucial element of interest. Additionally, the model analyzes the accuracy of measurements to avoid errors and inferior quality products. The fishbone method also observes the environmental conditions surrounding the production process. Most importantly, the model checks the quality of the workforce in terms of training and commitment to the project.

In conclusion, quality is the ability of an entity to meet its expected specifications. In project management, the quality consists of the aspect of meeting customer specifications and fitness for use. The fishbone cause and effect model of quality planning are applied in manufacturing projects to ensure quality through to identify the relationship between causes and effects in a project.
