Racial Identities Management

Over the years, racial discrimination has been a global issue that affects states around the world. Even though it is a point of concern to most governments, it is still affecting many countries as they have found it difficult to drive out. It is seen in places like schools, places of work, airports and any other institution where different races are present. Recently, the news addresses the case of racial discrimination against young Canadians Muslims who are mistreated in the country. This group feels that they are a target due to their identities such as name, state, appearance or clothing. They are mainly targeted in places like airports and borders which affects their traveling plans as they are easily identified. This paper will focus on the racial border discrimination practices against the Canadian Muslims and the impacts it has on their identity and citizenship.

Importance of the research

Since the government is working hard to ensure that cases of racial discrimination are driven away from society, the study is necessary to help address it. The rights of individuals are key in every citizen’s stay in a given country and should never be overlooked at the expense of promoting security. Since Muslims are also citizens of the country as other people who reside in Canada, they should be respected and treated the same way as other citizens. Racial experiences among them cause fear and make them uncomfortable as they are intimidated when they want to cross the border for their benefit. This comes as a result of prejudgment that Muslims are connected to terrorism and should be properly checked for security purposes. The false perception that Muslim religion is the greatest threat to western liberal democracy makes this issue a point of concern to the researchers.

This study is evaluative as it gives accounts of what the Muslim citizen undergoes while they are at the border or airports. It explains the racial identity issues associated with the Muslim religion and false perception given to them that leads to their mistreatment at these places. The paper highlights the evolving mechanism of security control that is used as a target for this group. As a result, they feel isolated as no one fights for their rights. A lot of theories connecting Islamism with security issues have the upper hand in promoting these discrimination issues hence causing the mistreatment among the Muslim society. The methods connect politics to Muslim with terrorism can be false and should not be relied upon. Instead, there should be a similar treatment of the citizens that promote equality in the application of the rights.

Sampling procedure

The sampling procedure used in the study is the simple random sampling where all members had equal chances of being selected. The study comprises fifty interviews of the Muslim citizens living in Toronto or Vancouver. It included twenty-four men and twenty-six women. There was no strategy used in selecting these group, but instead, it was the researcher’s judgment for the selection. They picked an age group of 18-31 which they feel is the best group to represent the study. This type of sampling is essential as it gives the people involved in the interview equal chances of participation. This can provide the research an opportunity to have the true finding of the case under study as they are given without bias. However, the procedure can be complicated in terms of time, effort and money. It is costly and time-consuming to interview fifty participants in the research. Sometimes it can be tiring to walk and conduct the interviews on every participant.

Ethical issues addressed in the study

The researcher highlighted laws that protect the right of the citizens that discourages that invasion to personal information of a person. This helps in the protection of a person as no one is allowed to invade their personal knowledge of belongings without their permission. As a result, Muslims are protected from mistreatment that leads to them being checked and detained for not committing a crime. However, the researchers did address the issue of how Muslims could fight for their rights. They can form groups that can help them in ensuring that they can defend themselves. This is important for their survival in the country even when they are traveling. Since this discrimination affects their business, they should stand for themselves to ensure that they are able to avoid such cases as detention. In this regards, they will be able to enjoy their stay, and the wrong perception that people have against them will not rise. The government should come up with laws that protect every one’s rights rather than rules that discriminate certain groups because of their religious affiliation.

Qualitative method used

The researcher uses small samples as a qualitative method to collect data. Of all the population of the Muslims living in Canada, researchers chose only an example of fifty people. They used this group to represents the entire community and used their experiences in making a general conclusion. Even though this method is suitable as it saves on time and money it is also tiring to some extent.  The findingsmight be invalid as it cannot be possible to use the experiences of fifty people to conclude the experiences of the entire population. This can result in misrepresentation as the views of the people who are active in the Muslim community while the opinions of silent people will not be captured. Despite the disadvantage, the qualitative approach is right in this study as it provides valuable data to be used in conclusion such as the needs of the people in the case being studied.

There is no evidence of triangulation in the study as the research only use a small sample data collection method. Throughout the study, the researcher was able to utilize the only process that involved sampling a section of the entire population to represent the Islamic community. Alternatively, the researcher can use the crystallization method in verifying the data in a research study. This is helpful as the writer will be able to come up with a valid and sound judgment in making decisions. In the research, the writer did not use the crystallization method which is an essential part of making a conclusion on a study. To ensure that the investigation is of high quality and significant findings, the research should utilize this method to verify the outcome from the interviews. As a result, there will make a sense of important truth and validity in the study. This method will help in avoiding the cases of biasness in the conclusion of the finding of the research.

Summary of the main findings

The cases of racial discrimination against Muslim society in Canada has been on the increase. The community members are subjected to excessive restriction and unfair treatment as they are sometimes denied permission to cross the borders and detained for here days before presented to the court. The state is against them and denies them their rights of expression and freedom of movement. This has resulted in different opinions among different people and nation on now Muslim community should be treated and perceived. The results are related to the study question that tried to access how to manage the racial identities among the Canadian citizens. The study is plumb because it has addressed the study questions and has come up with a valid conclusion about the research.

The study implies that the racial discrimination against the white people is associated with security issue. The government comes up with that are meant to protect the citizens, but on another look, they are made to discriminate the Muslim society. Most of the complaints of discrimination the Muslim community raise are not taken seriously by the government which forces some of them to remain silent even if they are being mistreated. They are denied their constitutional rights even when there is evidence of discrimination. All cases of discrimination reported to commission dealing with discrimination cases are not taken seriously which affects the Islamic community quest for equality and fight for their rights. As a result, most Islamic citizens comply with the airport and border persons even though they have a feeling that their rights are violated with these people.

Strengths of the study

The study has the primary study question which has been addressed in the findings. This is important in relating the study questions with results to enable one to understand the research clearly and efficiently. Secondly, the issues affecting the comfortability of the Islamic community stay in Canada has been addressed clearly, and all the oppression has been given. Lastly, the research used a small sampling method of qualitative research is helpful in data collection. It ensures that the study conducted is of quality and the conclusions made on the conclusion are of a sound mind and valid.

Weaknesses of the study

The use of small samples in the data collection is disadvantageous as some groups of people are not represented. It cannot be wise to use the experience of a section of people to represents the general expertise of entire population. Secondly, the study fails to address in details the ethical issue that are connected with racial discrimination among the occupants of Canadian state. Lastly, the study did not give recommendation on how these issues can be solved for better stay of the Islamic community. As a result, the people who were interviewed can view this study as a waste of time because there concerned were not properly addressed. They might refuse to take part in the research again for seeing no importance of participation in it.

Conclusively, cross boarder racial discrimination against the Islamic community affects their citizens and identity. They are mistreated as sometimes they are denied permission to cross boarder and detained for some period before presented to courts. This affects them mentally as sometimes they may remain silent if their rights are violated. The government come up with laws that protects human rights which is only applicable to the Canadian citizens who are not Islamic community. Sometime when they report the cases to the commission dealing with these issues, their cases are not taken serious. Even though the study does not address this issue implicitly, the research tried to take small sample to generalize the case for the entire population. This is important in ensuring that the views of the people within the study is captured. However the research did not give recommendation on how these issues should be addressed and solved. This is a major drawback to the study as the participants in the interviews might not be willing to take part again as they see no sense in participating in a research that dies not solve their problems.
