Racism in Soccer

I humbly take this opportunity to write to you informing you about quite an unfortunate incidence of racism in soccer. Racism has been a stain on the soul of soccer for quite a long time. I am pleased that your staff is working towards eradicating this vice from our beautiful game by imposing more stringent actions to persons found guilty of the offense. Through your campaign “ kick it out,” cases of racism in soccer have always been reported, and proper measures are taken. That in itself is a move in the right direction. It does not matter who the culprit is, be it a player, coaching staff or a fan, they all should be treated equally when found guilty of the offense.

Having acknowledged your quest for racism-free soccer and the desire to eradicate it from the game entirely, I then take this chance to inform you about a racism incidence that I currently witnessed in a soccer match on February 2, 2019. There were racist chants from the stands towards a New York FC player that prompted protest from his fellow teammates. The player, who is an African had to be escorted from the football pitch at the end of the match as the chants from the opposing fans intensified. It was such an ugly scene, and the player felt lonely. In the earlier stages of the game, the player had threatened to walk off the pitch if he continued to be targeted. A video of the match showing the spectators shouting at the player is available and has been widely shared on social media.

His love for this beautiful game that is meant to unite us made him hang on until the end of the match. I understand that war on football racism cannot only be left to FIFA alone. For this dream to be achieved, the various people that are in love with this game must step up to see that it is eradicated. This should start from the fans, coaching staffs and the players themselves. New York FC opponents demonstrated this in their post-match interview by strongly condemning a section of their fans who were involved in that ugly incidence. They assured that they are ready and willing to work with the various authorities in the investigations of the occurrence.

The team’s officials threatened to cancel the football tickets of its fans who will be found guilty of the offense. In addition to that, it will be of great importance if your body also gives out its punishment to those involved as this will further give warning to other people to shun away from this vice. It is therefore clear that people are fed up with such cases and would love to see it solved in whichever legal, possible ways so that it does not further stain our beautiful game. It is therefore of great importance that people become aware of the problems they might go through when held responsible. They should also understand that the game is there to unite us irrespective of our place of origin and skin color.

Lastly, I would again like to appreciate your effort towards fighting racism in soccer. I hope and wish that your team will closely follow the above incidence to ensure that the offenders are brought to book and appropriate punishment given to them. Bringing the culprits to book and punishing them is the only sure way that can sound a warning to other people who may have the same motive in the future. It is also the only way that you can communicate to people that racism has no place in soccer and that it is strongly condemned.

Thank You

Richard Cain.
