Reading response: Yaegaki –hime and Sakura –hime

Compare and contrast Yaegaki-hime and Sakura-Hime. How are they similar? How do they differ? What insights to Sakura-hime tells us about the Edo culture (Edo here refers to the town)

Yaegaki is a teen, and princess who was betrothed o katsuyori by the parents was now dead. The characters Yaegai Hime who is the princess in the story of The Japanese 24 Pentagons of Filial Piety, a teen betrothed to a young worrier Katsuyori who is now dead have a lot in similar and deferent the princess in The Scarlet Princess. The two princesses have highly emotional and controlled by love to extend that they are willing to take their lives after the death of their loved ones. In the process of love and affection, the two characters are badly hurt to the extent that they are about to take their lives. For example, Yaegaki loves Katsuyori so much that she makes his portrait. At the time she discovers that her lover is dead, she  is angered and emotionally hurt until she is about to kill herself. “No, no let me go at once, let me die. If this man is not Katsuyori” 340. On the other side, Sakura has badly hurt by the death of Seigen until she is convinced her life will have no meaning without Seigen. Even after death, the spirit of Siegen posses and appears to her. He goes to the extent of claiming that she will poison herself. “since I am poisoned/I assure you I’ll drink the cup down.”

The two characters also differ. Unlike Samurai who maintains a true and feminine role in the story, Yaegaki maintains a masculine role and goes to decide to go to get the helmet from alter and on the way she also fights a Samurai. She is determined to get into who killed her over for ravage. While Yaegaki seems to be a teen who is deeply in love and none who abides by what she stands and loves, Sakura is a mature woman and not a teen, and her level of respect to her husband (Gonsuke) whom they even have no proof of marriage is low compared to that of Yaegaki. She claims that he is of the low breed. From the study of Sakura’s characters as used in the story about The Scarlet princess, it tells us that edo had strong culture and traditions which people upheld and lived by.
