Currently, the healthcare sector is under increasing scrutiny regarding the professionalism of health care practitioners. Physicians and nurses are required to exhibit professionalism by ensuring they have healthy interactions with patients and staff, adhere to ethical practice and show commitment and reliability. Last year, my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and that was when I got the chance to interact with the health care practitioner. I was eager to know whether my mother would have an opportunity in surviving the chronic disease. Therefore, I took my time and engaged the physician with questions regarding their duties, cancer treatment and the profession as a whole. Besides talking to the doctor, I got the chance to experience how physicians and nurses operate in a healthcare facility. My interaction with the doctor was positive since he showed excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The physician encouraged and maintained a professional relationship with my sick mother and me. The clinical care provided to my mother was within the limits of their competence.
My interaction with the health care practitioner had a positive influence on my perception of the medical and health professions. I started to perceive health care professionals as friendly and competent individuals. The doctor-patient relationship is a significant therapeutic instrument for patients’ quick recovery. I was delighted that the doctor showed continuity and maintained a long-standing relationship with patients. From my interaction with the physician, I learned that effective communication played a significant role in enhancing doctor-patient relationship. Additionally, I found out that physicians’ administrative task is a heavy burden and people should give them credit whenever they deliver outstanding work. My perception of the profession improved since doctors need extensive knowledge and skills to perform administrative duties.
