Religion Should Not Be Taught In Public Schools

Religion Should Not Be Taught In Public Schools

Typically, the issue of religion is highly controversial throughout America. This is because the nation is composed of different ethnic groups which are scattered across America. Most of the people in America are believed to be from various places across the globe, and this has resulted in an introduction of different cultures and religions in the United States. However, most American natives believe that trying to impose religion in public places and school is a violation of the fundamental human rights of expression. Therefore, delving into some of the issues why religion should not be taught in schools and public places like the controversies which arise other teachers, don’t know different religions well and creating confusion among students ensures that we understand why religion should not be taught in schools.

First and foremost, religion creates a lot of controversies in schools and public places. The United States is composed of different ethnic groups hailing from different religious backgrounds. This has made America a pool of cultural diversity making it challenging to promote a universal religion. Therefore, trying to develop a particular religion in public discriminates against other forms of religion located in the United States (Abo-Zena, 2011). However, it is essential to note that every American citizen has the right to join any preferred religion. This right is protected by the constitution as long as the religion doesn’t pose a threat to the American people.

A good example is in the case of religious extremists groups like ISIS who try and mask their terrorist activities through the use of religion (Hayes, 2011). Additionally, religious diversities across the United States ensure that student interactions are promoted by providing that different people appreciate different diverse cultures. Therefore, everybody should be allowed to practice their preferred religious without the fear of being discriminated against or discouraged.

Secondly, most teachers and officials should not be permitted to teach religion in schools because most of them don’t entirely understand other diverse faiths. Before settling on teaching religion in schools, the government should focus on ensuring that teachers alongside other officials are adequately educated regarding different religion s(Abo-Zena, 2011). This will ensure that they are in a position to teach other students religion appropriately. Religion is a sensitive issue especially in society since it can ensure that social, political and economic relationships are promoted in the United States. However, training teacher on different forms of religion will be time-consuming and costly for the government.  Therefore, training religion in school should not be an option because it will be expensive for the government and will not promote social cohesion and interactions. Alternatively, schools can try to ensure that they have strict policies which provide that teachers and students respect diverse religions. This will go a long way towards ensuring that people can openly express and practice their religion without the fear of being discriminated against.

Thirdly, teaching religion in schools may create unnecessary confusion in public schools. In most schools, different subjects are being taught under the same curriculum. Therefore, adding religion might cause unnecessary pressure among students creating confusion (Hayes, 2011). The mind was designed only to take a certain amount of information and therefore adding more information may cause it to collapse. To ensure that the brain remains diligent and productive, just a certain amount of information should be fed to it daily to ensure that it does not become overwhelmed. Therefore, teaching religion as a supplementary subject in schools will only increase the amount of confusion in schools as a result of the number of subjects being taught in schools.

Lastly, some of the issues why religion should not be taught in schools and public places like the controversies which arise other teachers, don’t know different religions well and creating confusion among students ensures that we understand why religion should not be taught in schools. However, I firmly believe that public schools should be an avenue where diverse faiths are welcomed to avoid conflict in such institutions. This is mainly because America is composed of different religions as a result of its rich cultural diversity. I also believe that by ensuring that people have the freedom to carry out their religious duties efficiently then conflicts can be averted. Most students are already uncomfortable about their looks, grades and environment, therefore, adding another stressor like religion may only lead to devastating consequences. The government can also ensure that different places of worship are constructed across the united states to provide that every citizen has a place to worship. Additionally, parents should also try to educate their children on the importance of respecting other peoples religion to ensure that they don’t grow up in an environment where there is religious discrimination.
