Research Problem

The topic as a research problem that I began with was the issue of political extremism. I am interested in the phenomena of political extremism as it has caused several severe issues for society. One problem that has been exacerbated by anti-immigration political extremists is the issue of discrimination, insult, and assault of immigrants (Young, 2017). The research problem that I had begun with was not specific. The issue of political extremism is quite broad and covers any phenomena. I have now focused on a limited aspect of the issue that I would like to investigate. The specific research problem regards violent nativists and immigrants. Nativism refers to the political policy of prioritizing the interests of native-born over those of immigrants(Young, 2017). Supporters of the policy are called nativists. Racial nativists are those who support nativism and discriminate immigrants based on the immigrants’ race. The problem is serious and deserves keen attention.

My current research problem is to understand the experience of Latina/o immigrants in the United States regarding their protection from racial nativists.Racial nativist groups and individuals are likely to insult, assault, and/or discriminate againstimmigrants. The insult, attack, and/or discrimination of immigrants are likely to complicate their lives and cause racial tension in the country.I want to collect data from Latina/o immigrants regarding the experiences they have of the state and federal governments protecting them from harm that may arise from racial and violent nativists. The study will help understand whether the measures put in place by the federal and state governments are useful concerning the protection of immigrants from harm motivated by racial and anti-immigration sentiments.

Research Purpose

The purpose statement of my study is “to explore the experience of Latina/o immigrants in the United States regarding their protection from racial nativists.” The development of my research ideas is motivated by the desire to investigate a severe real-life problem and influence positive social change. The exploration will likely yield useful insights that will help promote positive social change. My current research problem is more specific than the previous one and more straightforward to research.
