Response to Wicked Problems Paper

Response to Wicked Problems Paper

First, I would want to commend you on the paper since it has some substantial content regarding wicked problems. To begin with, let’s first assess the positives that are associated with the paper. The paper has an introduction that sets the tone of what will be discussed. It is clear from the onset that the discussion will revolve around wicked problems that have plagued people in different parts of the world.

Regarding the wicked problems, I have learned something that I was not aware of initially. I could not have recognized euthanasia as a wicked problem. From your paper, I have come to understand that it is something complex and quite difficult to understand. The decisions made regarding this issue are not quite straight forward. It is subject to divergent beliefs and values. I also agree that poverty is a wicked problem. This is something that has been passed from one generation to another, without there being a solution to end it entirely. It is true that poverty is interconnected with other problems hence the persistence despite various policies being devised to try and eradicate it. Poverty aspects in developing countries cannot be approached using similar mechanisms like the ones used in developed countries. I also agree that inequality is among the wicked problems that we are currently experiencing.  It is prevalent in both developing and developed countries. Actually, it seems to broaden further as time passes by, and as countries actualize more development.

The paper also has various shortcomings. The major weakness of this paper is the structure. To begin with, there does not seem to be a comparison of the state of affairs when the Rittle and Webber paper was written and how the world is today. This is something that ought to have been included. The paper has moved from the introduction straight to the wicked problems being experienced currently. It would have helped the paper if you had tried to compare some aspects. This would have helped in showing how wicked problems or issues tend to persist. It is also not quite clear when you are transitioning from one issue to another. Use of descriptive headings would have helped in making this clarification. Another issue is the discussion of the wicked problems. There is no balance on how the three problems have been discussed. You spent a lot of time discussing poverty, and as a result, very little was discussed on the other issues, more so, the issue of inequality as a wicked problem. It would have been good if you had limited your discussion on poverty, and put in some extra words on the problem involving inequality.

Overall, I think the paper had adequate content regarding wicked problems. You have analyzed the problems and tried to explain why they are regarded as wicked problems. However, the structure is quite lacking in some aspects. It is good to have a clear structure as it helps other readers to comprehend the issues being discussed with ease.
