School Uniforms

School uniforms have for a very long time portrayed the identity of a school. Although, debates for and against school uniform are all over. School uniforms are a road to better academic performance and success (Ashby 2017).  Research conducted in Metro Atlanta found that uniforms encourage racial discrimination among black, white and Hispanic students. Despite the existence of such empirical evidence,  this discussion presents arguments that strongly support the ideas of having school uniforms and those that are against the idea. The debate is relevant as it provides the reader with sufficient ideas that might help them make sound decisions concerning having school uniforms or not. This paper seeks to analyze and summarize arguments for and against school uniforms using ideas presented by Kouzmine and Baumann &Krskova.

According to the article “ School discipline, school uniforms, and academic performance ” by  Baumaan and Krskova (2016), students in school attain high discipline levels and better performance because of their school uniforms .the article states that school uniforms saves time for students and are socially inclusive.  By social inclusivity, it means students from different backgrounds can easily blend. The paper aims at examining the role of school discipline among students in achieving better academic performance.  The Economic Co-operation for International Student Assessment provided data accompanied by a t-test for students with and without uniforms. The study found out that the level of discipline and performance for students who wear uniforms vary across different geographical regions. The article concludes that similar wears should be introduced in schools to encourage better performance.

The article “Why School Uniforms are a Bad Idea” by Kouzmine (2018), suggests that wearing a uniform in school is a poor idea. This article suggests that they make the student not express themselves in their groups through fashion. Besides, they are costly especially for parents who can’t afford them. They affect one’s self-image. The purpose of this literature is to identify students’ negative opinions about wearing school uniforms. The data got collected from kids and teens in school and their views analyzed. The study found out that a larger percentage of kids and teen’s comfort was affected by uniforms, it promotes conformity which limits independence. From the article, it is clear that students should be allowed to be free to decide the types of clothes to wear in school for them to perform well.

Kouzmine ideas only deal with students levels of comfortability as it concentrates on the students self –image and their freedom. Meaning wearing uniforms hurt the internal feeling of the students rather than the performance. On the other hand, Baumaan and Krskova put more emphasis on the effect that uniforms have on the performance at school. But they present opposing viewpoints. Although, these studies seek to identify how generally school uniforms affect students either personally or concerning academics. The article by Baumaan and Krskova is concerned about classroom discipline but do not explain how the student relates to their fellow students. Kouzime needs to give clear reasons on how the uniforms negatively affect classroom performance for students.
