Schools use the word “excellence”

Learning institutions use the word excellence to give an advantage to a category of students to be specific to the whites. It does not only happen at college levels but all levels of institutions of learning. It has come to my attention that schools do not use the word “excellence” to define the merit of their schools but to show the category of students they need in their schools and those who are to keep off. In most instances, the students who are kept off from these schools are those coming from poor backgrounds or minority groups while accepting the white’s bourgeoisie who could pay fees with ease. The only exemption is “NLU” learning institution that admits all kinds of students who wish to pursue their education at the tertiary level. This is the school where I learned and performed well due to the good facets of the school including the curriculum.

I have been teaching for a couple of years and have never heard of “multiple curricula.” A situation where teachers perceive their school as high class thereby, influencing the students to develop an egocentric nature of themselves and their school as being above any others. This is a perception that is only known by the students and their teachers. The perception of the school’s class makes other students who would like to join these schools shy off from applying as they feel they are not of the class, therefore, won’t be admitted. I was a victim of the circumstance where a school I was applying to be admitted extrapolated the requirements and value of the school which made me cut short my interest in schooling till I reached my thirties. The superfluous information posted on the school’s website left me perplexed and out of context just like a student who has not understood a concept in a past lesson.

I am not trying to criticize such schools, but as teachers, we should sieve the information we pass to the students because they take it in as have been taught and precisely assimilate it.  We should watch the conversation we make with students during non-teaching times lest the students belittle their school or other students from other schools. The verbatim should be those that support and make the students feel proud of their school in the context of performance and best practices and not negatively.
