Science is the study and observation of structure and behavior over time

Science is the study and observation of structure and behavior over time. Most of these observations are obtained through experiments. Over the years, science has evolved and brought forth many discoveries which include electricity, antibiotics, gravity, Big Bang theory, and quantum theory among others. All of these discoveries have created an impact on society. The discovery of electricity is one of the essential inventions that science has made. Kim (2007) outlines the effects of power, as a discovery in science, to the community.

Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity in 1792.Power has created a very massive impact on society.Firstly, many industries such as manufacturing, processing, and service industry have been established due to this discovery.Besides, electricity has enabled people to operate during the night. This increases their earnings and the country’s GDP. For instance, the invention of the electrical lamp by Edison in 1879 has provided employment opportunities in the lighting industry.

As opposed to the traditional methods of cooking such as firewood and coal, electricity has contributed to a pollution free environment since it does not produce smoke and other poisonous gases.Currently, hospitals have benefitted from the invention of electricity since equipment such as LASIK surgical tools, PET and CT scanners, ultrasound and MRI machines use it. Electricity has enhanced man’s lifestyle since many activities and tasks can be carried at ease. For instance, cleaning clothes is easy and faster due to the invention of washing machines. On the other hand, home appliances such as dishwashers, water heaters, ovens, and microwaves have also been invented to ease chores.

Contrarily, a lot of adverse negative effects have arisen from this scientific invention of electricity. They include acid rain and pollution, greenhouse effect, and radioactive emissions among other dangerous hazards. To begin with, electricity has led to acid rain and air pollution.During the manufacture of electricity, poisonous gases such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide are emitted in the air. These two gases are the main components form acid rain that leads to the destruction of plant and corrosion of iron sheets.

Furthermore, the electrical invention has also led to various effects such as the greenhouse effect.Greenhouse effects occur when the earth traps radiation rays due to the presence of gases like carbon (IV) oxide in the atmosphere. Over the years, human beings have resulted in over dependence in electricity. This has resulted in hazards, especially when blackouts occur. Power blackouts distract many activities in industries and hospital settings. Many healthcare facilities rely on electricity to operate machines, and slight outage may result in deaths. In addition, high rates from electricity providers have discouraged individuals from accessing it(Kim, 2007).In other countries, there is a monopoly in the provision of electricity. This leads to the exploitation of citizens.Nevertheless, there are electric voltage shorts and breaks which cause fire outbreaks.Electricity is also packed with numerous health risks such as radioactivity which leads to cancer.

Moreover, hydroelectric power plants that are constructed in rivers disrupt aquatic life and habitat. Use of coal to produce electricity causes global warming due to the emission of harmful gases. Global warming is the primary cause of climatic change in the globe.
