Self-Reflection Paper

Introduction

The role of social workers in society and situations of conflict is essential in mitigating disastrous events. A social worker should focus on restorative justice to restore members of the community and to encourage a sense of reconciliation. For the social worker to achieve their objectives, it is vital for them to embody the values of cultural humility. Social workers should understand the background of the local community and the cultural orientations which influence their decision-making systems. Equally, social workers should develop strategies to assist them in responding to a natural or human-made disaster. Effectively, social workers should contribute to the local community by understanding the magnitude of the natural disaster and recommending practical solutions. The effectiveness and efficiency of a social worker are dependent on their ability to understand the situation that the local community grapples with by understanding their cultural orientation.

Discussion

Restorative Justice

The concept of restorative justice is vital in the post-conflict resolution processes. The conflict resolution stage requires restorative justice to be applied to organize meetings between offenders and victims to aid the process of reconciliation. At times representatives of the local community are involved in the reconciliation process. Restorative justice is critical in society to ensure that violence and cases of discord do not occur. In my view, restorative justice should be encouraged to investigate the origins of the crime and to create a consensus building platform to recommend solutions that can be implemented to prevent the recurrence of past incidences. Restorative justice programs are also crucial in society to ensure that offenders take responsibility for the actions that they have perpetuated. I propose that restorative justice is introduced in all warring communities to ensure that victims and offenders are involved in the conflict resolution process to reduce the feeling of ofpowerlessness and anxiety. Instead of opting for retribution, it is essential for restorative justice programs to be introduced in society to support traditional methods of dispute resolution. Studies have indicated that offenders who are involved in the creation of a rehabilitative justice program are less likely to be engaged in repeat offenses.

Cultural Humility

The ideology of cultural humility has also been widely integrated into society to maintain interpersonal relationships and to define cultural identity. Cultural humility focuses on attributes of self-humility rather than raising awareness in the community. In conflict resolution, cultural humility should be a point of focus as it improves the quality of interactions. A social worker should seek to have the attribute of cultural humility to adapt to different cultural backgrounds. By having the trait of cultural humility, a social worker can improve the quality of services offered to the community. To a large extent, cultural humility is critical as it encourages self-reflection for the social worker. I agree that cultural humility should be propagated to assist social workers to understand their prejudices. Cultural humility is also essential to enable a social worker to know why they should consult widely to obtain background information about the community to increase their effectiveness. I also agree with the view that cultural humility can only be achieved in society if social workers have a worldview to eliminate all forms of discrimination in society.

Social Work Intervention in the aftermath of human-made/natural disasters

Social workers play an essential role in intervening after natural and human-made disasters. The intervention of cultural workers is vital in strengthening local communities and individuals after the occurrence of catastrophes. By working with vulnerable members of the city, the recovery process can becomes easier. The role that social workers play after natural disasters includes counseling and helping people to come to terms with the effects of disasters such as the loss of life and property damage. Social workers should follow a chronological order in intervening in the aftermath of human or a natural disaster. The effectiveness of the tasks executed by social workers is dependent on the creation of mitigation measures and preparedness activities adopted by society. A social worker should also be able to assess the impact of the natural disaster to create an active recovery process.

Asylum

The role of the social worker is equally essential in assisting victims of war the right to asylum. Social workers work with local communities to support them in applying for asylum so that asylum-seekers can relocate with their families. By assisting families in attaining asylum status, social workers work with asylum-seekers to identify their reasons for filling fleeing their countries of origin to connect them to countries where they can achieve international protection. The role of social workers is important as they identify the reasons for seeking asylum and assist refugees in immigrating to countries and geographical regions that are considered to be safe.

Conclusion

Social workers are an essential part of modern society. The task of social workers includes creating a platform for restorative justice by encouraging victims and offenders to reconcile. Social workers are also involved in assisting asylum seekers in applying to different countries. In the same measure, social workers should be included in local communities after natural and human-made disasters to help the local community come to terms with the effects of the accident.
