Winter 2019 Presentation Assignment Sheet
DUE: TBA (see sign up sheet)
LENGTH: 15 minutes
FORMAT: Oral presentation and one page printed handout
WEIGHT: 15% of final grade
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
This assignment will give you the opportunity to critically examine one of our required
readings, and to research a theme that goes beyond the reading itself.
For your presentation you should:
1) Identify one key theme or concept from the text that you find to be particularly
interesting, and explain this theme to the class by relating it back to one passage
of the text. Here you will demonstrate your ability to distill one particular
element of the text, and to expand upon a concept used by the author, making it
meaningful through your own analysis and elaboration. DO NOT SUMMARIZE
THE TEXT. This section should comprise no more than 1/3 of your presentation.
2) Relate this theme or concept to contemporary society by presenting a case
study. In order to do so you will need to find at least one scholarly source (i.e.
peer reviewed journal, scholarly book) and one popular source (i.e. news source,
documentary). Explain your findings to the class. This component of the
presentation will demonstrate your ability to use strong sources and to present
your findings in a succinct manner. Be sure to include the bibliographical
references for your sources on your handout.
3) Pose at least one question to the class that stimulates discussion. The question
should be framed in such a way as to allow for a variety of positions in response.
Your presentation will be assessed on the basis of the quality of your exposition of the
selected theme, the relevance of your case study to that theme, the quality of your
research, the nature of your explanation, and the effectiveness of the question. Be sure
to respect time and page limits.
Please Note: Failure to show up for your presentation will result in a mark of 0% for that
presentation. If you have documented mitigating circumstances (i.e. medical issue or
bereavement), then contact the course director before the class. Failure to do so will
result in a mark of 0.
