Spanish America Power Dynamics

Before the power dynamics developed the making of Spanish America, the Spanish settlement was dense, and there was active social integration of the native population that lived in the area. Some of the historical process experienced today was Inequality and oppression which led to power dynamics that led to the formation of Spanish America. Many communities preferred to live their traditional life with activities such as hunting and gathering being dominant in the regions they lived. The Europeans contributed a lot to the making of Spanish America as their coming led to the conflict between the native community themselves as well as between the indigenous communities and the Europeans. The local people in Peru and Bolivian highlands did not just sit and watch as rules were imposed on them. They responded to them and resisted some of them. However, this fight did not last long as many of the native tribes were killed in the battle as they tried to preserve their traditional way of life.

The Navajo who moved to the west in 1500 had a lot to lose after they started trading with the Spanish with frequent conflicts escalating. The Navajo were also present in the Mexican war one of the historical processes that led to the making of Spanish America. The Mexican war caused them to have conflicts with the Americans in 1949 which saw their sheep being killed forcing them to move to fort summer. The fight in Mexico was mainly between the Tlaxcalans and the Cholulans. These two communities viewed each other as enemies as they had engaged in battles with each other in the fields where the Tlaxcalans could emerge as winners.  When the Spaniards arrived in Mexico, they joined the Tlaxcalans to kill the Cholulans as they were convinced that they were their enemies. After the death of the Cholulans, the Spaniards proceeded further to Mexico. Moctezuma who was then the leader of the nomads in Mexico welcomed the Spaniards giving them gold necklaces from their forefathers and some of their best assets. The Tlaxcalans then chose another leader to represent them to the Spaniards a decision that they did not take well and saw as if the Tlaxcalans were fooling them. Though there was tension between the communities before the arrival of the Spaniards, their appearance made the conflict escalate further with communities killing each other.

The power dynamics was also as a result of inequality and oppression between the communities present. The conquest for Mexico not only affected the people in Mexico but also those close to America, for instance, Navajo who were killed by the Americas after the start of the Mexican conquest. Before the colonial economy, the native community has dense settlements, but after the coming of the Spaniards, they were dislocated with the Spanish settlement being denser compared to that f the indigenous communities. This move represented inequality in the area which would later cause conflict between the Navajo who were semi-nomadic hunters and farmers. The European community lived there for more than a century leaving the primary owners of the land who were the native populations oppressed.

How did these power dynamics create silences?

Inequality and oppression were the main factors causing the power dynamics during the formation of Spanish America. Abuse was evident when the native tribes could be killed in the colonial rule without any mercy. Oppression silenced the Cholulans when they were fighting with the Tlaxcalans in Mexico where they joined forces with the Spaniards after their arrival and killed them. This made the Cholulans the weaker community leaving them oppressed. With time, the Spaniards dominated the whole area of Mexico after they also had fall outs with the Tlaxcalans concerning their leader.

Inequality is also seen to create silence when the Spaniards left and settled in the dense settlements of the southwest which was home to the Navajos. The invasion of the Navajo to the Mexican war led to Americans killing their sheep in the fight. The steep raw materials in the dense settlements are what the native community used to form their culture which they regarded highly as it was their way of life. This oppression led to the Spaniards settling in the land that was meant to be theirs for more than a century. During this stay, the Spaniards dominated the area which was a major contributing factor to the formation of Spanish America.

What did surprise you from what you have learned so far?

It is surprising to know that the native communities dominated in these countries in the past centuries. It makes it hard to believe when I see the development present today, and I imagine the life they lived back then. It also surprises me of how a native community could be wiped out in such a terrible manner. It depicts the oppression that was present at the time. Though there are different forms of abuse still current today in the western land, it cannot be compared to what the native communities went through as they tried to fight to preserve their nomad way of life against invaders who had invaded their settlement areas. None the less, the native Americans gave us something to learn and be proud about. They were very passionate about their culture hence they died for it.
