Sports Officials Ethics

Of course, a referee should not gamble in a sport that he is supposed to be officiating because if they have a financial stake in the game, then they are in a position to influence the results of the game on their favor; therefore, rendering the whole sporting activity unfair. It is more unfair that such an act of swaying the outcome of the sport may go unnoticed by unsuspecting players and spectators (Morgan, 2018). The action of gambling referees can, however, be prevented by coming up with strict policies, and these regulations should include severe penalties whenever a player or a referee is caught gambling. Conducting more campaigns and education on the benefits of having fair sports within the club also prevents this unethical behavior since honesty would be cultivated in the clubs (Morgan, 2018).

Of course, sports officials should disclose all potential conflicts of interests similar to a judge because if their interests come up, they would be tempted to act unprofessionally in a game. Referees should be disqualified from officiating a game if a relative is involved in the game they are officiating because there will be a conflict of interest from the referee who would most likely not act professionally during the match (Morgan, 2018).The sports officials’ duties to a crowd at a sporting event are to ensure that they make fair decisions while the game is on and ascertaining that the game continues till the stipulated end time.Besides, they have to ensure that the crowd is managed well and does not interfere with the game; hence, game security.

Furthermore, sports officials conduct cross the line when there is a crisis, and they are forced to intervene – this often helps in the restoration of order and sanity if a match has been marred with some element of rowdiness. As such, sports officials should be seen and heard at the same time because the decisions they make must be communicated and this has to be done by talking to each other through consultative approaches made by the officials.
